This is unofficial, but straight from a relative who lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan: it was a helicopter that crashed into the apartment building. There is a large hospital nearby called “New York Presbyterian” that has a helopad on top. The helicopter was apparently heading for landing on the helopad on top of the hospital.

When it comes out that it was a helicopter and there was a mechanical failure, you still won't believe it. You will say that Bush personally sabotaged it and ran it into an apartment complex. This is clearly an instance where someone lost control of their plane or helicopter(more likely) and it crashed.

As far as other conspiracy stuff some may be believeable, but you have to be able to show evidence. I personally am still not sure what happened at the pentagon on 9/11.

People here have a bad tendancy to assume that anything and everything that happens in the world is somehow a conspiracy, or straight out of the mouth of Karl Rove in some elaborate plot to distract from whatever they think we should be talking about. People even said that about the Foley scandal and North Korea, now this is supposedly the event to take Foley and NK off the front page.

Though I must correct you on one thing: the Groom Lake research facility popularly known as "Area 51" does in fact exist. Its status was implicitly acknowledged by the government in a lawsuit by former employees back in the 90s, and if you care to download Google Earth you can look at satellite photos of the place.

2 to 3 apartments invloved up to 2 Floors burning. Unknown what floors. Reports it was a helicopter.

A small plane has crashed into a residential building on the East Side of the city, according to televised reports.

Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said an aircraft struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen. Flames were seen shooting out of the windows.

"There's huge pieces of debris falling," said one witness who refused to give her full name. "There's so much falling now, I've got to get away."

Aerial views of the crash site showed a thick cloud of smoke spreading over the East Side.

It was not immediately known if it was terrorism.

The building, located at 524 E. 72nd Street, has been identified as the Bel Aire building. It appears to be about 30 stories tall and houses apartments and medical offices. A fuel spill from the plane is causing fire on the ground.

The air traffic pattern for JFK, LaGuardia and Newark is very complex, it's actually amazing this doesn't happen more often.

It was an unfortunate and very rare accident.

Helicopters are used for vital tacks including medical care, construction and law enforcement.

Are we going to ban natural gas and automobiles?

There is no need to get excited every time a balloon pops.

I remember one case after 9/11 where a kid flew a plane into a building in a suicide. I think planes have hit buildings plenty of times before and it wasn't terrorism.

the impact was at the center of the building maybe about eight or so floors from the top. If the pilot was actually trying to avoid hitting the building it doesn't seem like he/she would hit it right in the middle.

Looks like the helicopter theory isn't true anyway according to eyewitnesses. I keep hearing a plane was losing altitude traveling west and turned directly into this building. Two bodies found on the ground.

I can't remember if they said it was a 50 story building or that the fire is on the 50th floor. In any event, it looks like the NYFD have reached the fire and have put it out.

Also, they are now saying the FAA is reporting a "Fixed Wing Aircraft" hit the building, and it looks like the wreckage fell in front of the buildings lobby.

I wonder why the reports are conflicting. Weird.

Myles O'Brien was reporting about what are legitimate flight paths for low flights in the NY area. They are limited to the air space over the rivers. So this was not a legitimate flight path.

Also it is very cloudy today in NYC, but according to O'Brien, the crash was below the cloud ceiling.

If Bewsh actually PLANNED 9/11, this is probably the underwhelming result.

Just as a response to some of the posts above that say, it's just another crash.

Although NYC has lots of air traffic and tall buildings, to my knowledge, planes have crashed into NYC buildings only four times: an army air corp B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in 1945; the two planes that crashed into the WTC on 9/11; and this crash.

Obviously there have been other crashes, such as the commercial jet that crashed in Park Slope Brooklyn in the 1960s and the jet that crashed in the Rockaways shortly after 9/11.

But there have only been these 4 crashes into tall Manhattan buildings.

So, while we need to stay calm and not jump to conclusions, statistically speaking, this does not sound good.

Another poster mentioned about the rarity that planes/copters crash into NYC building but it could feasibly happen and there is a chance that the pilot might have lost control (or perhaps fell ill of some sort).

Personally, and this is for all you USA Today columnists searching my posts, I'd like to see what happens before I start screaming terror attack, but I'm sure Repukes would love to see it like that.

Right now, we just don't know, so precautions are appropriate. There are a few suspicious details, such as that this was forbidden air space for small planes at that altitude. They are supposed to fly over the east river, not over Manhattan. Also, statistically such an accident is highly unlikely, because only once before in history has a plane crashed into a tall Manhattan building by accident -- in July 1945 when a B-25 crashed into the Empire State Building. The only other plane-building crashes were the two on 9/11, which were not accidents.

Did she not say she looked up after hearing suspicious noises and watched the helicopter crash into the building? Was she not a veep or other higher up in MSNBC or one of it's sister companies? Or is it that easy to confuse an airplane and a helicopter?

what hit the towers on 911 were large passenger planes loaded with fuel.

this was a small 4 passenger plane, hit at a steep angle with most of the debris hitting the street.

there was no plane - it was all an inside job.

I'm watching NY1 (local news channel) and they're speaking with a man from a building across the street. He says he saw the plane, which seemed to be a twin engine prop (i.e. propeller) plane, weaving around buildings; the engines were choking or sputtering, and seemed in distress before crashing.

According to a fresh report, the plane originated from a Peterboro NJ airport. One confirmed dead, another possible. I don't know if that's counting the pilot.

This is really freaky; I'm only fourteen blocks away, and I didn't hear a thing. The city's so bleedin' noisy as a matter of course during the afternoon that you can't even hear a plane crashing nearby! It's raining pretty hard at the moment, so I guess that'll help dissipate the smoke. I'm feeling nauseous though... bad memories of five years ago.

Anyway, just thought I'd give some local coverage.

She smelled smoke, then exited through the stairwell. The plane hit somewhere around the upper 30s on the building and this woman on 33 heard nothing (I can't believe she didn't feel something).

could be Cory Lidle of the NY Yankees. He was on record as having a pilots license with 400 hours of flight time. also FAA records show that he was either in the process of buying this plane or had bought it.

Several lower floors of the building are occupied by doctors and administrative offices, as well as guest facilities for family members of patients at the Hospital for Special Surgery, hospital spokeswoman Phyllis Fisher said. No patients were in the high-rise building and operations at the hospital a block away weren't affected, Fisher said. The Hospital for Special Surgery specializes in orthopedic operations.
