LEND A HAND: A mother's problems multiply but she's still thinking of othe
http://ledger.southofboston.com/articles/2003/12/06/news/news15.txt

Michelle has not heard from her oldest son in seven weeks.

The nine-page letters she writes him each week go unanswered. Every afternoon she holds her breath, waiting for a phone call.

Her 22-year-old son - an emotional and financial pillar for Michelle and her other six children - has been stationed in Iraq for seven months, but only recently did he tell her he would be out of touch for a while.

The combination of his deployment to Iraq, her three car accidents this year and worrisome news about two children's learning disabilities has left this single mother in a constant struggle.

Christmas isn't something she even wanted to celebrate this year.

<snip>

Sigh. Repercussions of a war for the rich by the poor.
