AP: GOP Chief Denies Helping Abramoff
GOP Chief Denies Helping Abramoff

The Associated Press
Sunday, October 15, 2006; 3:30 PM

WASHINGTON -- The head of the Republican Party said Sunday
he did not have a former State Department official fired at
disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff's request, despite e-mails
that reportedly suggest otherwise.

Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee,
denied playing a role in the firing of Allen Stayman from his
job as a special negotiator while Mehlman was the White House
political director.

Among Abramoff's clients were the Northern Mariana Islands,
which opposed Stayman's labor reforms for the U.S.
commonwealth.

"It is not true," Mehlman said, when asked about the Sunday
Los Angeles Times report on CNN's "Late Edition." "I did not
have the authority, as the political director, to fire anybody.
It wasn't my decision."

Sue Ralston assured Abramoff that the firing would happen and it did.
She had to pass that request on to somebody.

2. I have a feeling he will soon be asked about this under oath.
Let's see whether he lies again at that time.

3. Mehlman just got Rove's rubber stamp and it was done...
Just enough wiggle room for denial. He didn't say he knew nothing about it.

7. "I did not have the authority to fire anybody ... It wasn't my decision."
Translated into truth: "I do have the power to get people fired and I exercised that power, although someone else served in the official capacity of firing Stayman."

It's hard to believe that someone can be so dense and yet so transparent at the same time. :eyes:

9. it wasn't really a denial
Mehlman just said HE didn't have the authority to fire anybody...
which wasn't really the question...
it's about whether he got someone fired at Abramoff's request
(say by asking someone to fire the guy)

good god these republicans are sooooo freakin' slimey and smarmy...
do they really believe people don't see through their weaseling excuses???

13. Well, she was a special assistant for personnel to the preznit
But I doubt that anyone will be able to recall anything. They'll all just go spend more time with their families. This snippet is from a letter from Conyers in a rawstory article.

snip>
At the time U.S. Attorney Black was demoted, he was supervising a grand jury investigation into the lobbying activities of Jack Abramoff and conducting an ongoing investigation into possible corruption within the Government of Guam. U.S. Attorney Black had been serving as the Acting United States Attorney for more than 10 years when he was demoted. The timing of President Bush's decision to remove and replace U.S. Attorney Black is questionable and warrants an investigation.<end
