Agents raid homes of Rep. Curt Weldon’s daughter, close friend
http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/15772927.htm
Federal agents raided the home of the daughter of U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon (R., Pa.) and his longtime friend Charlie Sexton this morning.

The agents departed Karen Weldon's three-story brick home on Queen Street in Philadelphia with arms loaded with boxes.

A government car pulled into the alley to the back door of the house and loaded boxes into it. Three agents standing in an alley declined to identify themselves.

"I can confirm that we conducted a number of searches regarding an ongoing investigation," said FBI agent Jerri Williams, a spokeswoman in Philadelphia. "Details regarding those investigation cannot be provided because the accompanying affidavit is sealed."

In Delaware County, FBI agents had blocked off Kelli Lane leading to Charles P. Sexton Jr.'s Springfield house, and were removing at least one box and a bag of material from his home late this morning. Sexton, a long time ally of Weldon and a power in Delaware County GOP politics for more than three decades, is a business associate of Weldon's daughter.

The raids came three days after news broke that the FBI is investigating whether the Delaware County congressman used his influence to help his daughter, a registered lobbyist, win consulting contracts.

At an event earlier today at Philadelphia International Airport to discuss airport noise, Weldon said the investigation is politically motivated - blaming a complaint filed by Melanie Sloan, director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

"She is the only one I know of who went to the Justice Department and asked for an investigation," Weldon said. "I know that because I have her letter."

He added, "I haven't helped get my daughter anything."

Weldon, who is involved in a tight race for re-election, has said he has done nothing wrong.

This is the most corrupt group of politicians -- to include the White House -- to ever serve in our capital. These little bastards just can't keep their hands out of the gosh dammed cookie jar.

28. It was earlier than that
The FBI gave Weldon a copy ofthe letter???? Since when does a target of an investigation get the informant's letter?

"She is the only one I know of who went to the Justice Department and asked for an investigation," Weldon said. "I know that because I have her letter."

45. I read that differently
as:

The daughter asked the FBI to investigate her -- to clear her name. Weldon knows this because he has a copy of the letter that his daughter send to the FBI.

46. Why would they draw attention to themselves?
The bureaucratic inertia of the FBI will take beyond the election for a fair and impartial resolution.

10. I think the Spooks are trying to get even with Weldon
because he has been acting as the Chalabi (sp?)of the US House.

He has made several trips abroad and to meet with known liar mongers in an effort to gain intelligence on WMD, etc. He thinks he is smarter than the professional Spooks and a better judge of "intelligence data". He has been repeatedly used to catapult Iran and Iraq crap propaganda into the main stream - he doesn't know what he doesn't know.

Lesson - Don't mess with the spooks.

32. He's my representative. Secret agent man. With his own foreign policy.
Never quite understood Weldon, why he had such quirky foreign policy beliefs. Foreign policy is an oversight responsibility of Congressmen, not their job. Weldon styled himself a freelance diplomat. Laser-vision to see through veils of secrecy, like how the Pentagon covered up Able Danger and 9/11.

His friend and daughter being involved in lobbying for foreign corporate interests explains a lot.

I thought Sestak was a better candidate before this revelation. Now...

Bye bye, Curt.

If you had put your energy into lobbying for the Schuylkill Commuter Line, for your constituents, instead of those shady foreign interests, you might have won...

42. No I haven't met him.
Witholding judgment on Sestak, I don't have the sense that I know who he is. But I'll trust the Dem candidate selection procedure and vote for him anyway. I mean few aircraft carrier commanders are outright delusional.

Murphy has strong positives with me, although I've never met her.

44. She's very funny and approachable
We were laughing about ads that equated her with Al Quada because she had taken money from "radical" group MoveOn.org.

I've only seen Sestak speak - never talked to him personally. My circle of friends doesn't include too many aircraft carrier commanders, so I wasn't on the lookout for wacky behavior!!!!!

11. Let's see how this pans out
Personally, I don't think any member of congress should be allowed to have a close relative as a lobbyist. There is far too much opportunity for abuse and if they won't police themselves, we might have to do it for them.

17. This is no surprise
This story has been kicking around for 2 years. The only hope we ever had with this bunch of thugs is that their arrogance would bring them down. These creeps thought they were invincible, so they went about the business of looting every chance they got. Now it's time to pay the piper. Sestak sure looked good with Big Bill the other day on C-Span, an has a great chance to win now.

20. CNN: FBI raids home of congressman's daughter
MEDIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- The FBI raided the homes of Rep. Curt Weldon's daughter and a close friend Monday as it investigates whether the congressman improperly helped the pair win lobbying and consulting contracts.

Agents searched four locations in the Philadelphia area and two in Jacksonville, Florida, said Debbie Weierman, an FBI spokeswoman in Washington. The congressman's home and his offices were not among the locations searched, she said.

Earlier Monday, Weldon called the investigation politically motivated and called the timing suspect. The Republican, who is locked in a tight re-election bid and has clashed with the Bush administration, denied wrongdoing and said he gave his daughter no special help.

(snip)

Weldon, a 10-term Republican from the Philadelphia suburbs and vice chairman of the House Armed Services committee, is in a close race for re-election on Nov. 7 against Democrat Joe Sestak. Last week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee mailed fliers to voters in Weldon's district accusing Karen Weldon of getting help from her father on lobbying projects.

26. Weldon's every bit as credible as Ney, DeLay, Cunningham . . .
And all the rest were. Every last one of them angrily denounces any investigation or allegation of wrongdoing, demands respect and a retraction, and then, some weeks or some months later, stands in a courtroom, tearfully admitting to a judge that, yes, they had indeed been evil corrupt bastards, but that it was the booze. Or the chicks. Or the dudes. Or someone else's fault. They've been at this angry denial/crocodile tear game at least since the days of Whittaker Chambers.

40. and if it's funny to you, who cares if anyone else finds it funny, right?!
lol...

and is it me, or does all this corruption and amazing storylines of these rethuglicans getting busted, make that truthout story even more bizarre, that they were dead wrong on that matter???

I heard Rove said that Bush & he are very confident they'll retain the house.... hmmmm... if they're just saying that to keep the republican faithless inspired, fine, but if they're saying that because they know they're going to rig what they have to, when it's so obvious the dems should have at LEAST a 10 seat advantage, if not a 20 or 30 seat advantage, then you can count me in the streets with a million others... or more. I'm tired of it.

I want DU'ers who can to be prepared to give up a week to march wed-sun. if they do steal the elections, I'm hopeful that the amount of polling showing they're way down is so strong that they know they can't rig it without being so transparent...
