Calif. Republican asks Pentagon to remove embedded CNN reporters

THOMAS WATKINS
Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee asked the Pentagon on Friday to remove CNN reporters embedded with U.S. combat troops, saying the network's broadcast of a video showing insurgent snipers targeting U.S. soldiers was tantamount to airing an enemy propaganda film.

The tape, which came to the network through contact with an insurgent leader, was aired Wednesday night on "Anderson Cooper 360" and repeated Thursday.

In a letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., wrote: "CNN has now served as the publicist for an enemy propaganda film featuring the killing of an American soldier."

(snip)

"This is nothing short of a terrorist snuff film," Bilbray said at a press conference held in San Diego.

(snip)

In one instance, the tape shows a uniformed member of the U.S. military milling in a public area with Iraqis. A shot rings out. CNN fades the screen to black before the result - described as a victim falling forward - is visible.

(snip)

CNN officials defended their decision to air the footage.

"Our responsibility is to report the news," said Laurie Goldberg, a CNN spokeswoman. "As an organization we stand by our decision and respect the rights of others to disagree with it."

1. This has been posted repeatedly. Thank God for CNN

My nephew, a Marine, has served two tours in Iraq. He thinks it is time that the U.S. learn they are being used as cannon fodder in a civil war. W may have created it, and he stuck our troops in the middle of it.

9. The footage of the IEDs blowing up trucks and tanks is spectacular
You can literally see bodies flying through the air.

That's the shit they DON'T WANT THE PUBLIC TO SEE.

Its why those Fuckers who support the death penalty don't want public executions.

Its brutal nasty and it turns the stomachs of the "GIRLY MEN" like Draft Dodger Joementum Limpmann who will have your children fight for his NEOCON war criminal buddies.

2. I'm sure he's got no problem with embedded faux news reporters.
Someone has to report all of that good news that's happening over there that CNN can't seem to find.

3. Dear GOP dopes
This is going to come as a shock to you, but the media aren't an arm of the government and aren't in business to further GOP propaganda. I know that over the last few years it's been real easy to make that mistake, but strangely enough, your lethally stupid governance seems to have lost its ability to charm the media anymore.

4. I wonder if he's even seen the footage? I have and it's nothing even...

...close to "...an enemy propaganda film!" I saw it on CNN International a few nights ago, and it just looks like someone with a camcorder with an O.K. Zoom Lens, following U.S. Troops around at about 100 yards, in full daylight.

And it came from Baghdad bureau chief for Time magazine, Michael Ware. He was the same person who almost died while reporting for "FRONTLINE: The Insurgency," here's some links:

<http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/insurgency/interviews/ware.html>

<http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/insurgency/>

Rummy just doesn't want Americans to see how these Professionally made (on high-end equipment) this, and most of the other videos look. If you DO want to see a real Terrorist Propaganda film, just go to this U.S. Government Contractor's :hi:web site, they sell ALL of them on DVD for $39.95 each!!! The usually have them the same day they hit the news too!

<http://www.intelcenter.com/audio-video/qaeda.html>

Or you can see most of them for free at the site, that is also very closely linked to the U.S. Government: <http://www.siteinstitute.org/bin/multimedia.cgi?Category=video&Subcategory=0&sort=newest&Rank=1&Mode=all>

Here's a write up on the video from the same site: <http://siteinstitute.org/bin/articles.cgi?ID=publications219406&Category=publications&Subcategory=0>

And you won't believe the info they have on their home page, remember, this is a site that claims to be set up to help centralize the info for use by our (the U.S.) Government and News Networks: <http://siteinstitute.org/index.html>

I also found an archive site, where you can download Free high quality versions of a lot of these videos, but I won't post that link here, even though it's NOT a terrorist site. I'll IM it to anyone who really wants it.

20. Those are some harrowing vids.
You might mention that they can all be downloaded. They are short, not much more that three megs.

5. Tony Snow also ranted about yesterday...transcript
Q Do you have an update on Amarah, on the situation?

MR. SNOW: No, I don't. They're still trying to collect data and trying to assess exactly what the situation is.

Q Can I ask you something about what the President said today at The Mayflower? He was talking about the terrorists trying to influence public opinion, filming their atrocities, he said, emailing messages and video clips to Middle Eastern cable networks like Al Jazeera and opinion leaders throughout the West. Why the mention of Al Jazeera? And to whom was he referring when he talked about "opinion leaders" in the West?

MR. SNOW: Well, your network has shown pictures of snipers hitting Americans, which was used as a propaganda tool, so the fact is that -- it shows real sophistication on the part of these guys, because it creates the impression that Americans are sitting ducks, and that these guys are capable, when, in fact, while you have a capable enemy, they're dying in much greater numbers and suffering much greater damage. Now I know that's hard to -- as General Caldwell said yesterday, you can have this carnage and progress existing side by side. Unfortunately, the pictures are all moving in one way.

The President was referring to the attempt to take images like that and use those as a way of not only -- of trying to break the will of the American people. It's not going to work.

Q Does the President believe it's wrong for CNN to show that?

MR. SNOW: No, we're not -- I'm just telling you what happened. Those are editorial judgments, and I'm not going to tell you what you do and don't run. This is a free country.

Q But by mentioning this in a --

MR. SNOW: Well, because you asked the question. You asked who I was referring to.

Q Well, by the President raising it, I'm saying. By the President raising that issue, is he sending a message that he thinks it's wrong for networks to air that?

MR. SNOW: No, again, I'm going to let -- the President, I think, is smart enough not to tell television networks what they can run and can't run. But all we're doing is making it clear what's going on. I think, perhaps -- I'm sure the editors are savvy enough to know that when they get a video like this, it's designed less to give you a full and complete view of what's going on in the country than to create a sense of triumphalism for the killers of Americans. That's the intention of that. I think that's hard to dispute. That's the only point.

12. The most important thing IS not to let Republicans control the flow
of information. Their perception of what IS is NOT OURS!

Thanking God for the bravery shown by CNN journalists.
To date, so many have been killed. The number has got to be in the 300's by now..

18. Youre kidding of course
"One day, the media is going to charge his podium like angry wildebeest..."
If they didn't do it to McClellan, theyre not going to do it to Snow, who is more of the same only slicker.
Your statement assumes The Media would react negatively to Bush's ridiculous claims and evasions.
Disabuse yourself of these notions, theyre not reality based

Why do they have a problem with that? Besides, CNN didn't make the film, it only played it.
