Take Iraq death toll seriously: doctors
October 22, 2006
PRIME Minister John Howard should take a study into the Iraqi death toll seriously, according to a group of prominent Australian doctors.

- snip -

Mr Howard and US President George W. Bush dismissed the report, saying the findings were not credible or believable.

However, the Medical Association for the Prevention of War said both Governments should reassess their position.

"The study is the most accurate assessment of the Iraqi war dead and Mr Howard is being irresponsible by rejecting it out of hand," spokesman Dr Robert Marr said in a statement today.

The doctors stress the study was undertaken by respected researchers, with sound methodology and its conclusions should be taken seriously. The research team used surveys to estimate there had been at least 426,000 deaths and as many as 794,000 Iraqis may have died in this conflict.

1. The professionals in several disciplines
will pile on the pressure. How dare so called world leaders dismiss a scientific study because it implicitly exposes them as war criminals.

4. Have more objective people validated the study?
While it's good that the Medical Association for the Prevention of War wants the study to be taken seriously, has their been support for the methodology by respected scientific and statistical journals or other dispassionate sources?

5. Yes.
It was respected scientists who did the study; respected scientists who reviewed the study, and The Lancet is the world's premiere medical journal, who also vetted the study.

Statistical scientists have officially sanctioned the methods used.

But george w bush and howard and tony the bLiar simply dismiss the report as "not credible". And they know best; "wmd", "cakewalk", "weeks not months", "pay for its own reconstruction", "greeted as liberators"...

6. Analogous to global warming
The scientific community has been all but unanimous on this for years, but look at how long the message has been rejected by those who have vested political/economic short term interests in ignoring and suppressing the truth.

7. But where are all the graves?
This is the question that keeps popping up in letters to the editors around here, asking where they buried 650,000 dead without us knowing, or why the morgues aren't overflowing.

I have read that the Muslim faith requires bodies to be buried within 24 hrs of death, thus making delivery of bodies to a morgue uncommon. I also recall during Fallujah, they converted soccer fields and parks into graveyards to bury their dead. I guess there wouldn't be much left of a body to bury after hits from many of our heavier weapons, such as bombs and howitzer shells. Any other good rebuttals for the morons that keep writing in the papers?

8. The morgues ARE overflowing; a simple google will reveal
news report after news report about Iraq's overflowing hospitals & morgues.

The graves are what once were soccer fields, backyards, playgrounds.

A google search will reveal news reports on this, too.

But the easiest thing to do is the rightwingnut ostrich; "not credible".

I really despise rightwingnuts; stupidest MFers on the planet.
