Don't panic, Iraq tells U.S. and UK

By Adrian Croft 1 hour, 48 minutes ago

LONDON (Reuters) - Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih warned against defeatism and panic on Monday as his U.S. and British allies came under growing pressure to change their Iraq strategy in the face of relentless bloodshed.

Salih, in London for talks with British Prime Minister
Tony Blair and other British ministers, made clear his anxiety about the change in tone in London and Washington, where senior figures are questioning whether the current strategy in Iraq is viable.

"I'm obviously concerned about the debate both in the U.S. and Europe, I have to say, because there is too much of a pessimistic tone to this debate -- even I would say in certain circles a defeatist tone," he told BBC radio.

"We need to be realist but not defeatist. We need to understand that there is a need of utmost urgency to deal with many of the problems of Iraq but we must not give in to panic."

We'll hold Iraq nerve, says Blair

Britain intends "to hold its nerve" in Iraq, Prime Minister Tony Blair
has told the Iraqi deputy prime minister during talks on the country's
security.

Downing Street denied that Mr Blair had pressed Barham Salih for assurances
that Iraqi forces could take over policing southern Iraq within a year.

Number 10 insisted UK forces would stay until the job was done: "Obviously,
there is a process of transition and handover going on.

"Obviously we want this process to go as quickly as possible, but we will stay
until the job is done."

A spokesman for Mr Blair said the meeting had not been to "pressure the deputy
prime minister" on any "timetable" for leaving Iraq.

5. Methinks Mr. Salih...
...is worried that if his US and British soldiers leave Iraq, his own Iraqi soldiers will not be able to keep the insurgency from getting to him.

He's obviously afraid. Not that it isn't for good reason.
