McClatchy/MSNBC: GOP holds narrow lead in must-win Senate races
GOP holds narrow lead in must-win Senate races
By STEVEN THOMMA
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Republican Senate candidates have fought back to regain an edge in two key races, pivotal battlegrounds that could determine which party controls the Senate, according to a series of new McClatchy-MSNBC polls.

Republicans hold narrow leads in Tennessee and Virginia, two must-win states where the party hopes to build a Southern bulwark against a Democratic tide that's threatening their Senate seats elsewhere across the country.

The new polls show Democrats leading in two states they must hold - New Jersey and Washington - as well as in five states now held by Republicans: Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Yet even if Democrats take all seven of those, they still need to win either Tennessee or Virginia to take control of the Senate. Democrats must gain six seats overall to take a majority.

"Control of the Senate is going to come down to Tennessee and Virginia,'' said Brad Coker, the pollster for Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. who conducted the surveys for McClatchy-MSNBC in eight states, as well as one in Virginia for several major newspapers there....

1. How many times is this same story and these same polls going to be posted?
Enough already.

2. I think we should focus on Tennessee
If we were going to pull ahead in Virginia, after all that's happened, we'd have done so by now. Ford has held the lead in some polls recently, but Webb never has. As hard as it is to admit it, I don't think Allen is going to go down. Right now it looks like all we can do is try to put Ford in there. Since we only need one race, I think we should put all our ammo into the Tennessee campaign. That is, unless Webb has some big news he's been holding back on releasing. If he has it, now would be the time to put it out there.

5. can't agree with you more - TN is the race
that Dems can win - the yahoos in Virginia support Allen's civil war flag and dropping the "N-bomb" as signs he's one of them. Ford can become one of the new faces of the Democratic party - I can only hope the DNC steps in and supports him BIG TIME.

3. As Kathrine Harris says, (and she should know)....
""You can make polls say whatever you want."

And then Rove follows, with his sacks of money. (Rove's 72-hr Task Force):banghead:

7. Exactly, Virginia and Tennessee.....
....and that is exactly where Rove is going with his sacks of money......Virginia and Tennessee. (Allen is ahead now, and Ford is struggling.)

...oh dear..the democrats have no message
...oh dear..the democrats are ahead
...oh dear..the democrats are gonna blow it
...oh dear..the democ'rat' candidate's wearing Casual-Friday wear/SanFrancisco-chic/earthshoes
...oh dear..the race is getting closer
...oh dear..it's too close to call
...oh dear..is Hillary running in '08
...oh dear..is barak running in '08
...oh dear..the voting machines may not be accurate

:puke:

Cover time..republicans have chosen which states will be the "magic" states and of course the polls will start to show the tightening races so the republicans will "squeek by" yet again..

9. All they have to do is convince people that it's close enough...
...then they can steal the one or two races they need without looking suspicious.

Same shit, different year.

10. Of course they did
All for the "key" races will miraculously close to within "stealing distance" by November 2, and the talking heads drum up the "dems peaked too early" meme as their explanation for their pending miraculous, unprecedented comebacks all across the land.

12. Suggested new frame for Dems: Republicans are racists, viz.
Allen in Virginia and Corker in Tennessee. It's the apotheosis of Nixon's Southern Strategy in the wake of the '64 Civil Rights Act.

15. Quibble, the bigots in TN aren't exactly ashamed of it so trying to shame
them into admitting the repugs are rascists doesn't work 'cause that's why they vote repug. :hi:

We're working hard in my county of SE TN, cross your fingers, hold your breath, whatever is your way to wish us luck!

22. Nor are the bigots in VA ashamed of it. They will publicly say
they're not racists, then in private make racist jokes and comments. Allen screwed up because he blurred the line between public and private and got caught, not because he is (and has been) a racist.

13. time for the home stretch.
not surprising they're close--these are southern states, after all--which just makes it all the sweeter that we are even in the running.

i think they're still winnable, esp. Tennessee.

guess we should familiarize ourselves with the Sec. of State in those two states and get ready to defend the franchise in major urban centers there.

14. They are making mountains out of a molehills
From their website:

The margin for error, according to standards customarily used by statisticians, is no more than plus or minus 4 percentage points. This means that there is a 95 percent probability that the "true" figure would fall within that range if the entire population were sampled. The margin for error is higher for any subgroup, such as a gender or regional grouping.

While I like to be as optimistic as everyone else, most of those races (with exception of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington state and Rhode Island) are still within the margin of error. The ones that are within the margin of error and we are ahead in we could still come out losing - however, by extension, the ones we are behind in we could win anyway. Any race that is within that 4 point margin of error could go either way - unless there is some more movement before the final poll on November 7th.
What this means is w shouldn't get too comfortable with those poll numbers - it is within the margin of error - and a lot can happen in 2 weeks.

If you just want to call me a wet blanket - just google Sylvester Turner and find out what can happen to an election in the last couple of days.

18. Virginians too stewpid to vote...
The supposed poll lead George Allen has over Jim Webb is based on McClaskey's view of the average Virginian being unable to decipher the ballot wherein the candidate Jim Webb's name is reduced to James Jim... (who?) Supposedly, the computer won't allow Jim Webb's complete name to be printed on the screen. Walah! The voters won't know who runnin' gainst ol Georgie boy, got the same name as the president guy. Award George voter approval cuz they too stewpid to know they bin had agin.

19. Where did you read that? Are the electronic voting machines in VA
Edited on Tue Oct-24-06 05:09 PM by w4rma
really going to do that? Is it a certain company's machines?

Edit:
Found it. Machines in northern Virginia are chopping off Webb's last name (and party affiliation) and Allen's party affiliation.

He has effectively been removed from the ballot in the
part of the state where he would be expected to do best.

20. Best shot is in Tennesee. Open seat and a better Dem candidate.
Ford is a better candidate than Webb and Allen, as sad as he is, is a better candidate than Corker. So Tennesee is the race to focus on. But we should not give up on VA, a strong turnout in No. VA combined with a depressed turnout in the rest of the state could sitll beat Allen. Also we need to keep pouring money into NJ - we cannot let that one get away. I wish we had a better candidate there.
