Indian, U.S. Navies Conduct Exercises
NEW DELHI (AP) - Indian and U.S. destroyers, frigates and submarines conducted joint naval exercises off India's western coast Friday, officials said.

The training exercises include anti-submarine operations, boarding hostile vessels and a "simulated war at sea," the Indian navy said in a statement. A Canadian frigate also joined the exercises.

The U.S. Embassy said more than 6,500 U.S. Navy personnel were taking part in the exercises, which began Wednesday and run through Nov. 5.

"The purpose of the multinational exercise, which focuses on a number of naval mission areas, is to strengthen ties between American, Canadian and Indian forces as well as enhance the cooperative security relationship between the nations involved," the Embassy said in a statement.

1. India has a Navy?
 Hubby is Indian and I ask him one time why India didn't compete in the Summer Olympics with say, a swim team. He informed me that while India did indeed have water ways and was surrounded by the ocean...the waters were teaming with all kind of nasties that loved to eat humans. I thought it would make for faster swimmers...sometimes he dosen't get my humour.

an Army presence when I was there briefly, but no Navy, and we were all around the Bay of Bengal. Where do the base themselves?

5. check the online link
www.globalsecurity.com, poke around there a bit and I am sure that you will come up with stats on the Indian Navy or pretty much any other military force you would like to research.

Look here for information on the Indian Navy. Not an official site, but pretty informative. The page contains a link within it describing the history of the Indian Navy as well.

8. India is the regional power in the area
the navy proves useful in projecting that power, just as ours allows us to access and enter pretty much any area in the world. This is why many believe (and I agree) that China is not yet a military threat to, however they are building a larger and more modern navy. It's about the ability to project power, which goes back to Mahan's theory of control of the seas.

9. I think India is trying to step onto the world stage, and is a little thirsty for oil
India will regret getting into bed with the US. India can fracture should one ethnic group become agitated. Also, India becoming involved with unprovoked aggression against Iran would likely inflame its tense relationship with Pakistan.

I don't know why so many countries are willing to shoot their military, financial and credibility wads on Bushco.
