Vt.'s Sanders poised to be 1st Senate socialist (BERNIE!)
Mods this is 11 hours old so it is still LBN. I was just checking to see how Bernie was doing. BIG lead.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/11/03/vts_sanders_poised_to_be_1st_senate_socialist/

If elected Tuesday, he would be the first self-proclaimed socialist to serve in the Senate. Far from a stern ideologue, Sanders cuts an affable figure among his constituents, a trait on display at a rally this week at Castleton State College.

But in Vermont, he is known to most simply as Bernie, a towering political figure -- second only to former governor Howard Dean in fame -- who embodies the state's contrarian streak with his rumpled professorial look and unrestrained criticism of mainstream politics.

Vermont Democratic Party officials actively discouraged interested Democrats from challenging Sanders. But he has four other challengers: another candidate running as an independent, the Vermont Green Party nominee, the Anti-Bushist Party standard-bearer, and the nominee of the Liberty Union Party, which Sanders helped start in the 1960s.

As Sanders finished and walked away from the podium, Peter Welch, a Democrat in a tight race to succeed Sanders in the House, told the crowd: "Bernie is ready for the US Senate. But I'm not sure the Senate is ready for Bernie!"

3. BER NIE! ** BER NIE! ** BER NIE!! My Congressman...what a guy!!!
All Vermont (for the most part) LOVES Bernie!
The guy running against him is vapid male model -- a guy with money, NOT a Vermonter, who is attempting to buy the seat. That does NOT go over well here in New England -- and you'll find both sides of the aisle queing up to vote for Bernie.

OH! BTW.... he's been endorsed by just about everyone, including Jim Jeffords, the outgoing Senator.

The state college, where I am an English prof, just had a huge Bernie rally!
Go Bernie!

7. Go Castleton State College!
glad to hear you guys had such a good rally. Can't wait to vote for bernie and see richie rich go down in flames. I only wish Fred Tuttle had been alive to run against him in the repub primary and then back bernie the way he did when he backed leahy after beating Jack McMullen.

5. He´s caucusing with the Democratic Caucus
You don´t need to worry. He´s caucusing with the Democrats. He already votes our way 97% of the time anyways.

16. I believe so...
He's taking over Jim Jeffords seat, he, of course, became famous nationwide when he abandoned the Republican party and caucused with the Dems, this robbed the Republicans of majority in the Senate for two years. Anyways, Bernie Sanders IS, for all practical purposes, the Democratic Party candidate, he even won the primary, just refused to accept the results, under an agreement he made with the Democratic Party. So for determining committee assignments, yes, he is a Democrat, though not officially a member of the party.

19. Thanks - I hope this means we'd get to actually chair committees.
But I'm getting ahead of the vote, here. It's hard not to dream, though!

6. Is Bernie an Aspie?
I´m wondering if Bernie, like me, might be an Aspie. The articles i´ve read about him make be believe he has Asperger´s Syndrome like myself.

More about Asperger´s here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspergers

An archetypal Aspie character for a point of reference would be Dr. Larry Fleinhardt from ¨Numb3rs¨ which reminds me a lot of Bernie.

8. Nah, I don't think so.
Bernie's social skills and ability to read people are legendary here. I know quite a bit about Asperger's having worked with several folks who had it. All of them had, to some degree, difficulty socially. I'm sure there are Asperger folks who don't have that difficulty, but it does seem like a very common aspect of Asperger's.
