Airports across India on high alert following hijack threat

NEW DELHI: Airports across India were put on high alert Sunday after a warning that a plane flying to Europe or the United States could be hijacked, officials said.

Indian security agencies claim that the FBI's warning came after they received an e-mail from Chennai. Police are tracing the IP address of the computer used to send the e-mail.

"There is no reason to panic. All precautions have been taken. Our main concern is to ensure passenger security," said Dinesh Kumar, Director, Chennai airport.

Last week, there was a similar alert when a letter was found at Trichy airport claiming Al-Qiada attacks on airports in south India.

Investigations later revealed it to be a hoax.
