Annan urges U.S. to deploy troops in Liberia now
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N21352560.htm

UNITED NATIONS, July 21 (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the United States on Monday to deploy troops in turbulent Liberia "before it is too late" and warned rebel groups that any seizure of power would not be recognized by the international community.

U.S. President George W. Bush said the United States was working with regional nations, the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS, to determine when peacekeeping troops will be able to move into Liberia, but he gave no numbers or date. Bush also pledged to work with the United Nations to support a cease-fire, an indication that the White House was waiting until fighting subsided.

"I think we can really salvage the situation if troops were to be deployed urgently and promptly," Annan told reporters.

He renewed his call to ECOWAS to send in peacekeepers without delay and urged the United States "to spare no effort to support this deployment and to announce its own decision on the deployment of U.S. troops before it is too late."

2. nice try
you can bet if kofi annan really, really wants bush to do something, bush will do the exact opposite of whatever kofi says-- it's practically guaranteed. kofi wants bush to send troops to liberia? bush is like, "well, now i know what NOT to do." maybe if kofi had said, "please oh please mr.president, whatever you do, DON'T send troops to liberia! oh no anything but that!" then there would be troops there faster than you can say "humanitarian intervention"

those poor liberians. i hope somebody helps them.

3. Chimpy better send troops
or that will be the last straw. Too many promises have passed through his smirking lips only to be left shattered in pieces. If he renegs, he will be in big trouble--worse than he's already in.

4. I'd hate to be the US troops that get sent
Constant mortar and small arms fire by people who don't recognize your authority to be there is not a good way to spend time in an equatorial country.

But of course without a UN mandate...
