U.S.: Plane Probably Hit, Lands in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Guerrillas hit a U.S. Air Force transport plane with a surface-to-air missile, causing the engine to explode, a senior Pentagon (news - web sites) source said Wednesday. The plane landed safely.

The C-17 had just lifted off from Baghdad International Airport before dawn Tuesday when the engine exploded, slightly injuring one of the 16 passengers and crew, said U.S. Air Force Capt. Carrie Clear of 447th Air Expeditionary Group, based at the airport. snip

A senior Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the explosion as a direct hit by a ground-fired missile, "like the DHL" incident that damaged a cargo plane departing the airport last month. That plane, too, landed safely.

at some point these guys shooting those SAMs are going to take one of the planes full of our military personnel out of the air -

then what shall we do?

Laura will be wretched and Dimson will  alligator tears for his political campaign

we (here are DU) will be furious for the ineptitude and the sheep will bleat "4 more years" and offer up the children in sacrifice to their "gawd"

Los Angeles Times:

U.S. Plans Massive Rotation of Troops

The meticulously organized transfer in Iraq and elsewhere may increase vulnerability

The Pentagon is preparing to rotate a quarter of a million troops into and out of Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan early next year in a massive and risky undertaking that could leave them highly vulnerable to attacks during the changeover.

7. It's a big little plane...
and compared to the C5 Galaxy, it's tiny. Air force people call the C17 the SST (short stubby thing).

C17

VS

C5

9. I'm kind of glad it happened...
They're all okay and that's good, but it's also good that it happened to a C-17. It's a "bigwig" plane that flies in Rumsy and all his little cronies. Finally they get a taste of what our soldiers go through every day. They get an idea of how fragile the equipment is and how vulnerable every military person in that country is. They are finally getting a taste of the war that they forced 130,000 troops to fight for them. I only wish that one of the bigwigs had been on the damn thing. Now maybe they'll actually do some maintenance to those damn planes. Maybe next they'll send enough reinforced Humvee doors. Perhaps I'm asking too much. Look at how long it took them to get off their asses and fix the body armor problem! Sigh.
