Son also rises in testy Webb-Bush exchange (wanted to slug Bush)
Edited on Tue Nov-28-06 10:56 PM by RamboLiberal
http://thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/News/UndertheDome/112906.html

President Bush has pledged to work with the new Democratic majorities in Congress, but he has already gotten off on the wrong foot with Jim Webb, whose surprise victory over Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) tipped the Senate to the Democrats.

Webb, a decorated former Marine officer, hammered Allen and Bush over the unpopular war in Iraq while wearing his son’s old combat boots on the campaign trail. It seems the president may have some lingering resentment.

At a private reception held at the White House with newly elected lawmakers shortly after the election, Bush asked Webb how his son, a Marine lance corporal serving in Iraq, was doing.

Webb responded that he really wanted to see his son brought back home, said a person who heard about the exchange from Webb.

“I didn’t ask you that, I asked how he’s doing,” Bush retorted, according to the source.

Webb confessed that he was so angered by this that he was tempted to slug the commander-in-chief, reported the source, but of course didn’t. It’s safe to say, however, that Bush and Webb won’t be taking any overseas trips together anytime soon.

1. The *hole in Chief strikes again
My gods what a loathesome creature Bush is. He's handed out the same treatment to military families who DARE to question his all-holy decisions when granted an audience so he can "sympathize" with them over their losses. Now he's done it to a US Senator.

Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 10:35 AM by SemperEadem

6. I commend Webb for his strength
in the face of having Bush scold him. Here's Webb, a former Marine, with a Marine son in Iraq and Bush is doing his good old boy act. And, as usual, he's not listening. Here Bush had a chance to talk to a veteran, with a son in Iraq, and maybe learn something about how a military parent feels about the war in Iraq. And what does he do? Ignore the father -- and fellow politician -- and issue a reprimand instead.
This is the fatal flaw of this administration: no listening.

This is good that these type of off-the-record remarks get exposed. We get a little more insight into how a sociopath thinks and acts. Pretty shitty comment from Bush, but, then, I'd expect no different.

16. Slightly different version in WP article:
(snip)

"How's your boy?" Bush asked, referring to Webb's son, a Marine serving in Iraq.

"I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President," Webb responded, echoing a campaign theme.

"That's not what I asked you," Bush said. "How's your boy?"

"That's between me and my boy, Mr. President," Webb said coldly, ending the conversation on the State Floor of the East Wing of the White House.

17. Webb is a decorated Marine
I wonder why the GOP detest those who actually served while calling GOP chickenhawks and their kids who don't serve patriots.

Webb's son is an active Marine and Webb wished him to be home. W, was his usual arrogant self and ignored commenting on that wish.

In the meantime, the twins have gained the reputation of being international partyers, leading the good life.

Is there something wrong with this picture? I think so.

37. Like Webb, my son is a Marine
(two tours in Iraq - one more coming up in January), and my husband and I are increasingly annoyed with this administration's use of the military for purely political purposes. This exchange typifies that arrogant disregard. Bush didn't really want to know "how's your son doing"? If he did, he would have stopped, listened, and asked Webb to work with him on getting our troops home.
Instead, Bush took what could have been an opportunity and was flippant and rude. And we military parents are supposed to believe he really cares?

At a recent White House reception for freshman members of Congress, Virginia's newest senator tried to avoid President Bush. Democrat James Webb declined to stand in a presidential receiving line or to have his picture taken with the man he had often criticized on the stump this fall. But it wasn't long before Bush found him.

<snip>

"I'm not particularly interested in having a picture of me and George W. Bush on my wall," Webb said in an interview yesterday in which he confirmed the exchange between him and Bush. "No offense to the institution of the presidency, and I'm certainly looking forward to working with him and his administration. leaders do some symbolic things to try to convey who they are and what the message is."

What a FANTASTIC ticket that would be. The Fucking Dream Team, especially now that Gore has loosened up and will tell it like it is. He WILL fight, this I sense.

And Clark. Not much else he can do to get any better, although I think from a political perspective (not his chosen career so you wouldn't expect him to be polished at it) he is a bit off-putting. I hate to say it because he's a preferred candidate. But if I see it, imagine what others not positively disposed towards him initially see it.

It's not a huge thing, but it's there IMHO.

Which makes him the better VP candidate and Gore is one of the only people I would prefer to see as Pres over him.

GORE/CLARK '08!

45. Webb is a Champion Boxer
Webb fought against Ollie North for the boxing championship when they both attended Annapolis. Unfortunately, North won.

Webb got his revenge when North ran against Chuck Robb for Senate. North tried to "swift boat" Robb by claiming Robb was a parade ground Marine. Robb actually was a decorated combat veteran. Webb got a set of prominent Marines together in front of the Marine Corps Memorial and tore a new a-hole into North. Robb won.
