Rumsfeld says worst time as Pentagon chief was Abu Ghraib revelations

PENTAGON (AP) — Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says the worst day of his nearly six years in charge at the Pentagon was when he learned of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse in Iraq.

Rumsfeld told Pentagon employees in a farewell town hall meeting that he remembers “feeling so deeply sorry” for what happened at the prison.

Moments later, he said with a smile his best day will probably be a week from Monday — when he turns over the Pentagon to Robert Gates.

Rumsfeld received warm applause and cheers both at the beginning and end of the sometimes emotional meeting. He choked up briefly while telling the crowd about a bracelet a woman in Alaska gave him as a reminder of sacrifices made by some soldiers who've had their stay in Iraq extended. He has vowed to keep wearing the green woven bracelet until the 172nd Stryker Brigade returns home.

22. Soon thereafter, at a press conference,
he "praised" Specialist Joseph Darby for revealing the torture via digital photos.
Rumsfeld was kind enough to name Darby, identify his position and his location in Iraq.
Darby has said he was terrified. Once he was IDed by Rumsfeld he felt he'd be dead soon.
Thankfully, Darby has reported that about 85% of his fellow soldiers took his side and gave him cover until he was out.

The episode has two revealing aspects.
First, the vast majority of soldiers in Iraq were disgusted by Abu Ghraib.
Second, Rumsfeld is an abject liar.

Sorry? That doesn't begin to cover what should have happened.

ACLU Argues Case Against Rumsfeld

Today, in federal court, the ACLU and Human Rights First argued its case that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld should be held accountable for the torture and abuse of detainees in U.S. military custody.

Today’s hearing marked the first time a federal court has considered whether top U.S. officials can be held legally accountable for the torture scandal in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Am hoping someday I will be around to see these bastards caught, put on trial, and going down in history as being as bad or worse than the Nuremberg war criminals.

Because I would seriously like to know, and compare it to when the matter became public knowledge.

20. Liar. It was when he learned that the press was reporting on it.
It has been shown that Rumsfeld signed off on the abuses and supported them and worse.

21. That's what he's sorry for
He's sorry that the torture, and his role in these shameful acts, were made public. He's not sorry that it happened, only that he got caught.

23. Like a common criminal, Rummy is sorry he got caught
Like you said, he is a liar and continues to be a liar. Rummy signed off on torture in Gitmo and at Bush's global gulag.
