Jesse Jackson Mum on Endorsing Candidate (But Praises Dean)
LOS ANGELES -- Rev. Jesse Jackson praised Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Gov. Howard Dean Thursday, but refrained from endorsing any of the nine candidates running in the 2004 election.

"We want a president who will even the playing field," Jackson said. "What do we want? We want the American promise. Today we have the power to build a strong coalition. When we do our best, great things happen."

Jackson said the Vermont governor has captured the imagination of many young voters and people in his own party. But Jackson said endorsing any one candidate could hamper his effectiveness in fighting for social causes.
