Wisc. Stations to Air Dems Ads on Bush (They will be shown!)
MADISON, Wis. -- Three Wisconsin television stations will air Democratic ads that accuse President Bush of misleading Americans about Iraq's weapons program despite a request from Republicans not to run the spots.

The ads show the president, in his State of the Union address, making the now-disavowed statement about Saddam Hussein seeking uranium from Africa for a nuclear weapons program. The Democratic National Committee paid about $20,000 to air the ads on stations in Madison, Wis., a strongly liberal college town.

snip........

Tom Bier, station manager of CBS affiliate WISC, said the station decided the spot was no worse than any other political ad. It was scheduled to air just after midnight Monday.

"We just see it's part of a good, robust First Amendment issue that, frankly, the public is very aware of," Bier said.

2. The local news I watched at 6pm in Madison covered this extensively
Edited on Mon Jul-21-03 06:30 PM by htuttle
It was the lead story on WISC, and they showed all or most of the spot during the newscast as well.

As one local political science professor interviewed noted, "They are trying to see how the ad goes over before it airs elsewhere. If it doesn't work here in Madison, it won't work anywhere."

I'll take that as a recognition of Madison, WI being the MOST liberal community in the nation.

:)

Thank you. Thank you very much.

9. I think some of the same interviews were in the article as were on TV
Prof. Ken Meyer was one of the people that WISC interviewed.

The WISC report at 6pm was really pretty good. They interviewed two poly sci professors, and no partisan representatives from either party. They also sort of summarized the 'controversy', and in the process, showed most of the ad.

The gist of the piece it was about Madison getting nationwide political attention (we're starved for attention here...I know we're not that many electoral votes, but...). There was no counterspin against what was shown in the ad.

The segment was probably a full 5 minutes, and it will no doubt get reviewed again on the 10pm broadcast.

20. I disagree
Wisconsin's electoral votes are important. Wisconsin and a few other states were considered as possibly deciding the outcome.

Now Indiana which has I believe 1 more electoral vote than Wisconsin is not even consider as a deciding state because 1) it is the first state to declare their results for President and 2) it is unlikely for Indiana to go Democrat for President

11. Sometimes Ads Are Run For The "Buzz" Created
The controversy over a particular spot is more important than the ad itself.

Arianna Huffington's spot about "SUV Owners Support Terrorists" for instance.

It didn't show around too many places... I think just in Washington.

The main point was to get it covered by the media.

3. Madison, Wisconsin?
Edited on Mon Jul-21-03 06:31 PM by Demobrat
Oh brother. Talk about preaching to the choir. That ad needs to run in Phoenix right about now, not Madison.

On edit: I guess the post above explains it. But I sure would like to see it run in some red states.

4. One of the people on Madison's local news pointed out something
Although it's only running as a test in Madison, the story ABOUT the ad has gotten free news coverage nationwide.

Of course, to tell the story about the ad, most stations show part of the ad.

10. Yes! Thank you Repukes!
By sending a letter to try to stop the ad from running, you both showed yourselves up as anti-free-speech bullies, and have given the ad exposure way, way beyond what it had gotten from its $20,000 placement budget!

7. They won't run it here (PHX) unless
it doesn't raise hackles elsewhere; even our ABC station is RW. I think the DNC is right to take it slow.

The MoveOn ad is a good one too; I'd like to see it air more often but they don't have the funds.

For objecting so strongly and stupidly to this ad, you got it tons of publicity and played almost whole on the news for free.

15. I smell a setup...God I hope I am wrong.
One of my few tinfoil hat moments come when people discuss the WMD. I cannot shake the feeling, and that is all it is, that this would be the perfect setup. Let the Dems. carp about finding nothing...really get the bandwagon going and then POW!! out comes real evidence.

I have read in here where people think we alredy have Saddam or Osama and are merely waiting for the right time to drag them down Main street. I rather doubt that. Producing Saddam would be way too useful in calming Iraq right now. Osama...he would be better quietly questioned and killed than making him a martyr.

But WMD have an unlimited shelf life as far as news coverage goes. They can be trotted out at any time for the most effect.

I'm taking the beanie off now. Just had to get it off my chest.

21. I don't believe this is a setup
The Administration has been in severe damage control mode for the past several weeks, and their stories aren't consistent from one interview to the next. If this was a setup, they wouldn't be panicing. They know that the only think propping up Bush's favorability ratings are the impression that he is honest and that he will protect us. This story has laid the seeds of doubt on the American public, and even if they can pull some WMDs out of their hat, it may be too late.

27. At this point, I don't think it matters one way or the other
  • If * KNEW they had them, why didn't he direct the occupying forces to go secure them first thing (as in, before the oil fields and the Ministry of Oil)?
  • If * KNEW they had them, somewhere someone (like the originator of the information) must've had some inkling of WHERE they were.
  • If they HAD them, why didn't they USE them if they were such a gawdawful threat to everyone?
  • Oh, I see you've found the WMD -- might we inspect them to ascertain their point of origin? No? I thought not.

I don't see it as a setup. Stumbling over any WMD now opens up a whole new set of questions, and they can't even handle the ones they've already got.

So you're left with two possibilities:
(1) BushCo is evil and/or incompetent; or
(2) BushCo is incompetent and/or evil.

16. It's a good strategy
The ad is geting lots of news time, and they are replaying it on cable news too.

So it's getting out to a wider audience.

22. I watched and I'm not sure about it
For me, having followed this story closely, it seems redundant and too predictable. I mean we all know what he said and it appears we are hung up on the one line - I know it's a big deal but I think it would play better if we tossed some other exaggerations and 'lies' that *, Rummy and Condi has made.

On the other hand for Joe Blow this may be the first he's seen it or really thought about it.

There is so much dirt on this presidency that I see many other areas we can hit him - maybe later.

I did like the Fox News feed - reaction would be "wow, if Fox thinks the pres might be lying too then he must be lying"

26. Milwaukee CBS Affiliate Covered the ad on local News
four times....three times yesterday and once today, playing almost all the ad. This alone reaches more Republicans than an ad playing at midnight in Madison.
