Man of the Year: Jim Sensenbrenner
OK, OK! Not my choice of course! But now that I have your attention, Human Events Online just exposed it's moral vacuousness in making this selection of their "Man of the Year" today. How they can have this Rethug as an "example" of someone is "respecting the division of powers built into the Constitution", who shuts down (probably unconstitutionally) debate on the Patriot Act (another set of laws disrespecting the Bill of Rights, etc.) just shows how even though this magazine understands that the election is a symbol of how the Rethuglican Party is paying for moving away from it's earlier principles, doesn't seem to understand how it's a part of the problem when it lauds this idiot!

Man of the Year: Jim Sensenbrenner

by Terence P. Jeffrey
Posted Dec 22, 2006

Lord Acton’s famous observation that power tends to corrupt has been lamentably borne out by the recent history of the Republican Party. When it finally gained control of both the White House and Congress, it turned away from some of the very principles that had secured it majority status.

Yet Acton’s axiom has not been reflected in the behavior of at least one Republican leader in the House of Representatives. He is Rep. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, who has served for the past six years as chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and whom the editors of Human Events have chosen as Man of the Year for 2006.

Conservative Principles

First elected in 1978, Sensenbrenner has served in Congress for almost three decades without setting aside his core principles—and they are decidedly conservative principles. He is a fiscal conservative. He is a pro-life, pro-marriage social conservative. He has been hawkish, but not reckless, in his approach to foreign affairs and national security. And he has a profound respect for the division of powers built into the Constitution.

In this Congress, Sensenbrenner valiantly spurred House Republicans to use their power as the majority party to thwart President Bush’s illegal-alien amnesty plan. At the same time, he effectively promoted serious border security and immigration reform proposals of his own.

8. We all feel the pain, Parche
So many of us worked very hard, including people like you in far-off places, to defeat this guy. But it seems that there are too many in the district who have no sense and vote a straight Republican ticket. The anti-gay amendment didn't help either. We will be taking the next few years to develop the party in the district and maybe there will be better news in the future.

Until then, take heart from the fact that his party didn't allow Sensenbrenner to be the ranking member on John Conyers' Judiciary committee, and didn't give him the ranking member position on Science that he wanted either. So he's just an ordinary member now. Too bad for him.

6. Unofficial lobbyist for the banking industry.
He did all their bidding on the new bankruptcy "reform" act while holding stock in several large banks. The guy wouldn't know a conflict of interest if it hit him crossing the street.

7. Human Events is a RW hate-mongering rag
It is affiliated with Regnery Press, which published the Swift Boat book, and numerous anti-Muslim publications, among other things.

I would not look for them to publish anything sensible. Their selection of Sensenbrenner is par for the course.
