Five US troops killed in Iraq as December toll tops 100

BAGHDAD - Five US troops have been killed in Iraq, the military announced Thursday, bringing December's death toll to 101 and keeping the month on course to be among the bloodiest for American forces this year.

...

The highest monthly death toll for American soldiers so far this year was in October, when the annual Ramadan holy month saw a spike in violence which left 106 US soldiers dead.

13. They cannot be numbers of "troops" to me.
One was my nephew. I never, never thought that this would happen. It is just so hard to take in.

6. Wasn't October supposed to be an isolated "spike"?
I seem to recall Mr. Rumsfeld vainly trying to reassure the folks paying the bills in Iraq that the wave of violence in October was going to be an isolated little spike, and that things would be back to "normal" in Iraq after Ramadam. Looks like three deaths a day is becoming normal, but I didn't get the impression that that's what the administration meant.

Well, I'm sure Mr. Bush will be out to explain it all to us soon. Not to worry. It's just a number. A comma in the great march of historical events.

9. Aaaah, I'll let 'em slide on that one
Conservatism is selfishness, so for them to feel that it's all about them is "normal".

Those hiding behind that spiel probably believed it. After all, they hate us for our freedoms, don't they?

It IS tiresome ridiculous crap, though; I'll give you that.

It's also fun to point out that it's WRONG, so thanks for reminding us.

12. What is the civilian bodycount? Anybody reporting on it these days?
just askin', thought it might be relevant, being that we're told the Iraqis are benefitting from all this occupational bloodshed with improved national stability.

14. I always wonder what the death toll of our #1 ally in this fight is, the ISF members
There's no data on that one which seems unusual.

16. We need to put up a clock, like the national debt clock
Right in Times Square. Along with a "Days Bin Laden still free" clock, an "We're still in Iraq" clock, and, of course, a "US military death toll in Iraq" clock.

19. What gets me about this months total is this...
in the past when the death total topped 100, it was because some sort of "operation" was underway to "win the freedom". Nothing of that sort has happened this time. (unless they are keeping something from us)

So does this point to a whole new stage that the fucked up war has entered?

Words escape me as to why this bullshit continues. We will pay long and hard for this one for many many years to come.
