More Signatures Than Needed Submitted in Calif. Recall
<SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - As supporters of California's embattled Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites) made a last-minute legal appeal to stall the recall process, state officials said on Monday they had received more signatures than needed to force a special election.

The office of California's secretary of state reported it had received 987,306 signatures as of Monday afternoon, about ten percent more than the 897,000 signatures needed to force the first gubernatorial recall ballot in the state's history.

However, the office said it had verified only 268,325, so an official announcement of a recall was still not expected for several days. Some of the state's largest cities have yet to report the number of signatures they have received. >

and ... THERE MAY BE HOPE YET!!!

<Taxpayers Against the Governor's Recall asked a state appellate court to block the secretary of state from certifying a recall until a hearing on accusations that some out-of-state signature gatherers illegally took part in the Republican-led effort to unseat the governor.

"These people are not California residents or taxpayers, yet they collected thousands of signatures to force the lieutenant governor to call a special election that will cost the state from $25 to $40 million," the appeal said. >

and ... ISSA

<Republican Congressman Darrell Issa, who has spent at least $1 million of his money to back the recall, has announced his candidacy.>

1. It would be great if the same judge who
rejected the signatures of the people of Sunnyvale CA in a case involving developers would be the judge to decide this issue!

I am so sick of Democrats being forced to go by the letter of the law while Republicans can flout the law.

2. Signatures are BULLSHIT
Edited on Mon Jul-21-03 10:11 PM by BeHereNow
there has been a MASSIVE drive to collect signatures
ILLEGALLY. I have encountered them personally.
The whole Davis recall was funded by REPUKIAN dollars.

I recently ran into a "Stop junk mail" and "No dollars for politicians"
booth at my local grocery store in SoCal. Curious, I read the
so called "petition" and signee form- NOT A WORD about the
so called cause to stop junk mail or pay to politicians, what ever the hell that
was supossed to mean.
In good evil DUer form, I confronted the manager of the market
about the fact that he had a false claim happening in front of the market.
In other words, a person claiming to gather public signatures in relation
to legislation- fact is. there was NO connection to ANY legislation
and the signature form.
the woman begging for signatures, who barely spoke English, and
I suspect was a member of the RIGHT WING nut case Korean "x-tian:
church here, got REALLY pissed when I started telling people who were signing
WITHOUT reading, there was NO actual bill number on the form they
were signing...duh? And that their signatures could now be attached to
ANYTHING. It was not pretty- but I guarantee you that is how the majority
of these "recall" signatures we collected were acquired.
STILL pissed-
BHN

3. Yuppers, and...
"The whole Davis recall was funded by REPUKIAN dollars."
Not only that, but the man who wants to replace Davis has been the #1 fundraiser.
You don't think he has an agenda, dya? Nooo... :eyes:
