Broncos right cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed this morning after leaving a nightclub near 11th and Grant in a limousine. The team confirmed the death of Williams.

A female passenger also was shot, according to a source familiar with Williams. Williams was 24.

"I learned from the Denver Police Deprtment that this incident has occured," Williams' agent, Jeff Griffin said early Monday morning. "No other details have been released. I sincerely offer my condolences and feelings to his family."

Williams was the Broncos' starting right cornerback and played his final game for the team in a 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers that eliminated Denver from the playoffs on New Year's Eve.

10. community activist have to agitate to get cops
walking or cycling beats, literally to protest! For awhile, a few years back, they had police operating neighborhood posts, little trailer like places where citizens could drop in and beat cops hung out etc, but quietly, as 'conservativism' pressed for increased budgets etc, those little police posts disappeared (i haven't seen one for 2 years now)...actually, it's a fact that the piggy wants police as remote from the people as possible. and the killing of the football player will givem ammo to press for more of it...

40. Why do you assume that this was somehow
related to "gangsta" culture? Because he was black?

Would you say the same thing if it was a white player that was killed in a drive-by shooting in Denver?

Not only did he play hard and well, but his smile could light an Xcel Energy grid. It is a shame when any young person dies so needlessly.

17. Darrent Williams (Denver Broncos) killed In Drive by Shooting

DENVER (AP) -- Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting early Monday, his limousine sprayed with bullets in downtown Denver.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene and told him three people had been shot, and the 24-year-old Williams had been killed. His death came hours after the Denver Broncos were eliminated from the playoff race.

A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was fired on from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. As many as a dozen bullet holes were visible on the driver's side of the vehicle. One window was blown out and four others had bullet holes.

Three people in the limo were hit and taken to hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified.

25. How awful. My condolences to his family
and to all who loved him. What a senseless and horrible death. May he rest in peace.

24 years old. Dear Lord, what a tragedy.

No man is an island, entire of itself
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
if a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls
it tolls for thee.

That's what is sickening to me. I hope the murderer is caught, arrested, delivered appropriate justice. I'm not even sure if I want to see the DP implemented for the murderer, but I'd rather have the murderer sit in prison in a rathole and think about what he did.

28. Wife woke me up this morning to deliver the news
I'm stunned. REALLY stunned. This is an senseless death. I live here in Denver, and shooting happened less than about 5 miles from my house. He and Champ Bailey were the top tandem cornerbacks for the Denver Broncos. I don't know how they are going to replace him, but it's a sad day today for me.

I guess it hits close that football players are seen as tough, but all are mortal.

36. In April, Denver Nugget player shot while driving home from nightclub.
These two incidents led sports radio hosts today, on the station where Darrent Williams had a sports show, to ask about the gangsta phenomena. The station was a little slow since the regular morning talk shows were replaced by syndicated sports shows due to the holiday. Many callers expressed their sadness and good wishes to his family.

The Denver Nugget, Julius Hodge, has recovered from being shot in the leg. "Eyewitnesses saw someone flashing a gang sign at Hodge in the parking lot. The manager says Hodge was wearing a bandana over his head." http://julius-hodge-news.newslib.com/story/4059-2800990/
