Negropnte to move from Dir. Nat Intel to Dep. Sec State.
This on a flash from MSNBC. Not online yet

Could Condi's sad, mad face yesterday be related to being demoted?
Did Bush finally realize that her advice has been, to put it kindly, for shit?
Is Negroponte being groomed to take her seat over?

or that Bush is planning to step up some raw, violent aggression in South or Central America and will be needing his death squad expertise.

condi could be going to the VP slot so Cheney can resign to be with his family more, setting her up to run for Pretzeldents office.

With the appointment of an old spook to head DoD, the Bush Administration has effectively created an entirely new intelligence network as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Defense. They have remote intelligence in the Naval Reconnaissance Office and the NSA, human intelligence from the double-secret non-DIA spy agency that Rumsfeld created, and operational capability with SOCOM. They have their own torturers, their own assassins, their own psychological operations, their own reporters and news outlets. They may control some or all of the $2.3 trillion that went off the books on September 10, 2001, and they have Paul Wolfowitz running the World Bank.

Why would Defense want to cooperate with other intelligence agencies at this point? Which means Negroponte pretty much didn't have much of a job to do as intelligence coordinator.

But if Defense intelligence wants to make a clean break, it means they have to kill off one very powerful rival: the CIA. And CIA is in a vulnerable position now, now that they've effectively become the world's largest dealer of Asian heroin. Everyone knows it, it's just that for the moment Congress is pretending it doesn't know.

And suddenly, Negroponte accepts a demotion, which gets him out of the heroin business. Hmmm.

Negroponte stepping aside as top U.S. spy to become deputy secretary of state
The Associated PressPublished: January 3, 2007

WASHINGTON: National Intelligence Director John Negroponte will resign to become deputy secretary of state, a government official says.

Negroponte took over in 2005 as the nation's first intelligence chief responsible for overseeing all 16 U.S. spy agencies. He will return to his roots as a career diplomat to become the No. 2 to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the official said Wednesday night.

Negroponte is stepping down as President George W. Bush develops a new strategy for the war in Iraq.

The official said the timing of Negroponte's departure was uncertain, but it was expected soon. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because there has been no announcement of the move.

From your link:
But with Democrats holding the balance of power in the Senate, the confirmation may not be an easy task, our correspondent says.

Questions have already been raised about his involvement in the illegal funding of the Contra rebels in Nicaragua in the 1980s.

That could be very productive. So many questions have been given the "firk off!" response so many times in the past. This would be a wonderful time to prompt him to act like someone answerable to the taxpayers.

From an earlier article:
JOHN NEGROPONTE & THE DEATH-SQUAD CONNECTION
Watching the Shadows | News | Syndicated Content
Bush Nominates Terrorist for National Intelligence Director

by Frank Morales

"He will be a key figure in US counter-terror operations." —BBC News, Feb. 17, 2005

"I think he could have stopped all these assassinations and torture... We're against this nomination. If he didn't see human rights violations in Honduras, it's possible he won't see human rights violations anywhere in the world." —Leo Valladares Lanza, former head, Honduran Human Rights Commission, quoted in New York Times, March 29, 2005

On February 17, 2005, President George W. Bush nominated John Negroponte, 65, to be the United States' first National Intelligence Director." According to various published reports, Negroponte will be the president's "primary briefer" in the area of global and domestic intelligence and counter-terror operations, coordinating and overseeing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Security Agency (NSA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other agencies.

His upcoming Senate confirmation seems assured, and that is a scary prospect. Why? Because Negroponte has a long and bloody criminal history, dating back to the early 1960s, of overseeing the training and arming of death squads, schooled in the techniques of torture, "forced interrogation," assassination and, as we shall see, even genocide. He has been described as an "old-fashioned imperialist," active for nearly four decades in Vietnam, Central America, the Philippines, Mexico and most recently Iraq. He got his start back in the days of the CIA's Phoenix program, which assassinated some 40,000 Vietnamese "subversives."

Negroponte to Leave Intelligence Director Post, Official Says

By Jeff Bliss and Janine Zacharia

Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte will leave that post to become deputy secretary of State, said a Bush administration official familiar with the decision.

The official, who asked not to be identified, didn't know when the move would take place or who would replace Negroponte.

In his new position, Negroponte will be Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's second in command. He will replace Robert Zoellick who resigned the deputy secretary position in June to become a vice chairman at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in New York.

The change coincides with President George W. Bush's plans to revamp his strategy on Iraq.
