Bush names Texas Friend to run HUD
WASHINGTON — To head the federal housing agency, President Bush turned to Alphonso Jackson, a longtime expert in the field and a faithful friend.
Bush said yesterday that Jackson, the No. 2 official for the past three years at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, "knows the issues facing HUD and knows how to get things done." The president announced his choice before family and aides in the White House's Roosevelt Room.

If confirmed by the Senate, Jackson will succeed Mel Martinez, who has resigned to run for a U.S. Senate seat from Florida.

1. It is getting to be the US of T
I ran into so many people from Texas when I lived in Alaska that it turned me off from that state. They even hated it that Alaska was larger. They finally won as the Southern Christians moved in to Alaska and made no bones about it. They planed to run the state. When I left Alaska the churches were fightinh that they could take care of any women, or child that was beat in their own churches. The state was to keep out of it. A good step back for women and child if they won out. They were already changing laws.

3. Could be worse....
He's African-American, one of 12 children born in South Dallas. He may be excessively "business oriented" but his career includes building public housing in North Dallas against the protests of the oh-so-white North Dallasites. No great hero, but his appointment does not give off the same stench as so many others.

I'm more concerned about the outgoing secretary, Mel Martinez. Do we really need a rabid Cuban "exile" senator?
