Possible meteor or space junk seen all over the region

KUSA - Beginning at 6:15 Thursday morning 9NEWS was flooded with calls from viewers, many of whom said, “I have just seen the most incredible thing ever in my life.”

That incredible thing appears to have been either space junk or a large meteor falling from north to south in the western part of the city. At this time, 9NEWS has not received any reports of personal injury or property damage.

9NEWS spoke with a representative at the Air Force Space Command who said they are analyzing the data and hope to have some official word early Thursday morning. They believe it could have been a meteor or space junk. The Air Force Space Command tracks space junk and all items entering the atmosphere.

Viewers from all over the region have been calling 9NEWS, some as far away as Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming, to report their sightings.

Unidentified Falling Object

"I was lying on my bed reading SMS-messages when I heard a noise like an Airbus aircraft firing up its motors."

"It was raining but there was no thunder or lightning. The noise grew louder and eventually it sounded like a million turbines screaming in unison," Ras said.

I'd like to remind them as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.

Which was the official explanation issued by the government at the time.

See how the pieces are breaking off as it hits the atmosphere? The object I saw, all the "lights" traveled together and didn't change positions relative to each other as it moved across the sky.

And see how the burning pieces leave smoke trails? The object I saw, there was no trail, smoke or otherwise, there was however brilliant and sparkly multi-colored "thrust" that moved outward from the rearward "lights" at about twice the speed the object was traveling.

Oh, and see how the path of this object is a large degree arc? The object I saw (and hundreds of others saw BTW) moved from slowly from north to south in a perfectly strait line.

Screw the official explanations. :)

That said, I wish I had been up at 6:00 this morning to see it myself.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Jan. 4) - Authorities were trying to identify a mysterious metallic object that crashed through the roof of a house in eastern New Jersey.

Police received a call Wednesday morning that the metal object had punched a hole in the roof of the single-family, two-story home, damaged tiles on a bathroom floor, and then bounced, sticking into a wall.

The object was heavier than a usual metal object of its size, said Brightman, who added that no radioactivity was detected.

The Federal Aviation Administration, which sent investigators to the town, did not know where the object came from, said spokeswoman Arlene Murray.

"It's definitely not an aircraft part," she said. "I can't speak beyond that as to what it might be."

A lot of spacecraft have gold foil or gold-coated mylar parts. A chunk of gold or a gold alloy would be likely to survive re-entry.

Plus the influence of recent solar flare activity is bound to cause some things to fall. Solar flares heat up the upper atmosphere, which causes it to expand and cause drag on low-orbit satellites.

i once witnessed a satellite breaking up and falling down in chunks, quite dramatic, but it was in an isolated area and i never learned what it was, it was on a low polar orbit so i'm told it was some soviet craft of the day but i never knew which one

it is cool to see and at first when you see several burning pieces tracking across the sky together it is quite spooky, indeed giving the impression of a fleet of alien crafts moving across the heavens
