Poll: Majority of Japanese oppose sending troops to Iraq
TOKYO, Jul 21, 2003 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX)

A majority of Japanese oppose sending troops to Iraq, a newspaper poll said Tuesday.

The Asahi Shimbun, a major daily, showed 55 percent of respondents were against dispatching troops to help police and reconstruction efforts. A survey conducted by the paper last month said 43 percent opposed.

The poll said 33 percent favored sending troops, down from 46 percent in June.

The report came as national lawmakers were preparing to pass a bill authorizing the dispatch of ground troops to Iraq to help rebuild its war-battered infrastructure and provide logistical support for U.S.-led peacekeeping operations. ---

1. Why does it seem like none of the 'coalition' leaders get it?
And why does it seem like non of them have the backing of the constituents?
