Bush would veto Medicare bill: White House

-The White House on Friday threatened a veto of a bill that would overhaul the Medicare prescription drug law to allow the government to negotiate prices with drug companies.

"If this bill is presented to the president, he will veto," White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters. -

1. oh, I hope so...
he will piss off seniors and drive them screaming into the arms of the Democrats.

He will make more people mad by showing yet another example of his arrogance.

He will hurt the Republicans because the Democrats will bring up the issue again to override the veto so that the Republicans will go on record. There is no escape from 08. The Republican congressmen know that you cant spin pain.

Then the Democratic Party can save the money they were planning to use on campaign '08. Don't spend spit and whoever is chosen our Predidential candidate will win hands down anyway.

This effects seniors directly.
For example, my 81 year-old father falls into the donut hole in November and December.
He had to pay $385 in cash for his Plavix in November.
Of course my father would never vote for a Reptilian*, but millions of others will connect the dots.

Amazing. In 2002 it looked like Bush was leading us into a one party state and in just 4 years he has singlehandedly destroyed his own party.
The silver lining in this eight year nightmare.

*Reptilian Party - I think you just renamed them on DU!

Promising a veto if the bill makes it to his desk, President Bush has said that competition is already reducing prices for seniors and creating an environment that encourages the development of new drugs....

"The president and his Republican allies have argued that this bill would do nothing. Then why, I must ask, would he bother to veto it?" said (John) Dingell, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Twenty-four Republicans voted for the legislation. Rep. Dan. Burton, R-Ind., was one of them. He noted during the debate that Americans pay more for medicine than residents of other countries pay. Also, the government negotiates for other products.

Translation: Big Pharm has contributed heavily to the Republicans & wants to reap the benefits. But even some Republicans realize the bill makes sense. And...they might want a chance for re-election, after Bush is gone.

The VA can negotiate drug prices, but Medicare is not allowed to.

25. This bill is essentially meaningless
it gives the government the authority to negotiate drug prices -- but no leverage to restrict the formulary (which the VA has). Even if enacted, it would accomplish nothing.
