"Our troops are to be congratulated on carrying out this mission with the skill and dedication we have come to know of them.

"Now that the dictator is captured, we must also accelerate the transition from occupation to full Iraqi sovereignty."

1. Spoken like the Leader he is
Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 12:31 PM by opihimoimoi
Bush, on the other hand, is like a cheerleader cheering the Quarterback who threw a touchdow to score 6 points late in the game... but still trailing by 28 points.

Come, we go find his pom pom

4. You're welcome
You gotta give credit where credit is due, you know? Clark said that it's good news, and now we need to give Hussein a speedy and transparent trial. (Like we're ever going to hear what Hussein really has to say...)

7. Our candidates are speaking like men of good sense.
I love that our choices are so good that we're torn between them all.

(Saying "men" leaves out Mosely-Braun who is also sensible but not a heavy contender in this race. My apologies.)

17. It's been very hard to favor either of the two candidates
Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 06:14 PM by MODemocrat
Actually, I love Wes Clark and think he is such a statesman. He or Dean will make a wonderful president. It's just that he came into the race later on and I was already supporting Dean. Whoever wins the
nomination will be fine with both my husband and me. :toast:

6. classy
Very classy of Dean to say that, though he and Bush have policy differences on Iraq, he's not going to jump all over Bush today ... to give Bush a day to be happy about the capture.

9. Hang Joe
"If Howard Dean had his way SH would sill be in power...." - Joe L.

What an outrage! How does Joe know that's what Dean would want. Just because one did not support the war does not mean one supported the Iraqi dictatorship!

Time for someone to have a talk with Joe and straighten him out!

10. I don't think that Dean
Didn't want SH out of the way...I think he didn't believe we should enter into Iraq unilaterally.

The cold war ended without a single shot fired. Did SH's capture just legitimze the loss of all those American lives?

Joe, it's time to leave this party and be the Bush boot-licker you've become.

28. Here's the MTP transcript
From Holy Joe's pious piehole to an unsuspecting nation:

Russert: As you know, Governor Dean has surged to the front of the pack in the Democratic race, now called the front-runner. He was endorsed by Al Gore, the man who said three years ago that you should be the person one heartbeat away from the presidency. Why did Al Gore endorse Howard Dean and not you?

Lieberman: Well, you'd have to ask Al Gore that question. From my point of view, the last week has clarified the choice that Democrats and Independents who vote in our primaries have between Howard Dean and me. He will take this country backward to where we were before Bill Clinton transformed our party. I'm going to continue more determined than ever to fight for what's right for my party and my country. That means supporting middle-class tax cuts which he's opposed to, supporting fiscal responsibility, supporting a strong defense. And let's be real specific. On the question that we're celebrating today, Howard Dean throughout this campaign has said he wasn't sure that Saddam really represented a threat to us. At one point he said, "I suppose the Iraqis are better off with Saddam Hussein gone." I would say this, and this is a choice the voters have to make in the primaries. If Howard Dean had his way, Saddam Hussein would be power today, not in prison.

27. What Leiberman doesn't remember
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 01:55 AM by Gore1FL
if Dean was in power, SH may or may not be in power, but we'd have lot more money, living soldiers, ready divisions, better world relations, and for that matter, possibly Osama.

Every time he opens his mouth, Lieberman puts me in a state of involuntary vomitting.

To use a Scorched-earth nomination strategy is moronic.

14. Changed race: can Dean overcome what will be Bush's propaganda triumph?
With Saddam's capture, our Glorious Leader will be getting lots more media kisses from now until November.

If you think the media has proven it knows how to drop to its knees, just watch. Already on CNN today -- which I watched briefly while channel-hopping en route to the news for grown-ups on Newsworld International -- the little pundit droids were all saying the Dems have no issues left with Saddam in chains, the economy improving, etc. etc.

Saddam is significant, of course, but more as a symbol than anything else. The process leading to his trial will give plenty of opportunities to make Bush look good -- and distract perfectly from the ongoing deaths of US troops and Iraqi civilians.

Don't underestimate this. Having a symbol to say, "Look, all those deaths weren't in vain!" is enormous.

Can Dean counter that? Personally, I doubt it. This race is going to move beyond reason and sense, now, and into the realm of pure emotion.

22. Agreed...if that long, even
I doubt very much that the capture of Saddam will have an ounce of effect on anything in Iraq. He wasn't directing the resistance from that hidey-hole, that pretty clear now. So either someone else is doing it, or there is no organized resistance--it's just The People who want us out of there.

Bush may get a week-long poll jump out if this, but that's all, IMO.

16. Americans have a short memory
Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 05:26 PM by Jen6
they already forgot Osama, and what good is Saddam's capture to any of us if our troops keep dying, our jobs keep evaporating, the dollar continues to plunge, the environment keeps getting raped, the treasury continues to be looted, healthcare becomes less and less affordable, schools continue to lose their funding, the baby boomers increasingly cannot retire, our rights continue to be eroded....an invented war is not the only issue, my friends, it's a major distraction to keep our eyes averted from the issues that truly effect our lives and our future. We must remind everyone that this was a voluntary war against a non-threat that we continue to pay a dear price for. How is any American's death justified when he wasn't a threat to any American? Sure, he killed a lot of people years ago, many at a time when we could care less, just as we turn a blind eye to the slaughter in the Congo today.
The truth is; we stirred up a hornet's nest for profit. we created more terrorists with the invasion, not less. The world will be a different place next November. Today's "great victory" will no longer inspired the people, who by that time will be more interested in Trista and Ryan's divorce than in anything real that's occured in the past 11 months.

21. Let's be realistic
Howard Dean couldn't say may regarding the capture of SH. He has based much of his campaign on the Iraq war and when something like this happens, its best to say little and stay out of sight. We should not look at this through rose colored glasses. The capture of SH was good for the Iraqi people and the American military, but it was not good for the Dean campaign.

23. disagree
I really think it's neither good nor bad for the Dean campaign.

He should speak out now and take this opportunity to remind everyone of the whole argument of "why" we took over that country and continue to occupy it at the rather dear expense of American lives.

He should remind us that you just don't go around taking over countries, carving them up, and selling the pieces to your friends--regardless of how"bad" a dictator is.

The people of Iraq do deserve self government !!-
GOOD DEAN STATEMENT !!!

And we should add that the people of Iraq also deserve to keep what's rightfully theirs and we need to ensure the non privitatization of their resources (oil) !!!

Bring our troops home now !!

24. I just don't think this will be that good
for stupid bush. All the death and destruction to get SH ... It is like blowing up a house to get rid of a rat. I think his approval rating might go up, but as time goes on and he still can't get our soldiers home that rating will go down. And even if by some miraculous circumstances he does bring them home, then people will start paying more attention to the ecomony and what is going on around them. And I don't care what the experts say, if you don't have a job the economy isn't improving for you.

and as always, I think lieberman should shut the hell up.

26. The bump will be short lived - I'm glad they got him now
Sure, we all know SH is bad man and we want he gone but we all know the lies that brought us here.

Anyway, I'm glad his been captured with the election still almost a year away. Imagine the effect this would have had if it occurred in the summer or fall of '04? The hoopla will die down in a couple of weeks. Especially if our soldiers keep dying w/o SH to blame.

My only fear is the we'll have an OJ like trial in length and coverage over SH. Everyday we will hear about the atrocities in IRaq under SH and everyone will forget about WMD, OBL, and the Bush lies.
