Russia completes air defense system deliveries to Iran - Ivanov-1
16:12 | 16/ 01/ 2007

MOSCOW, January 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has completed deliveries of Tor-M1 anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran, the defense minister said Tuesday.

"We have supplied modern anti-aircraft short-range missile systems under a contract. Iran is not under any sanctions," Sergei Ivanov said, adding that Moscow will continue to develop military and technical cooperation with Tehran.

ЗРК "Тор-М1"Russia undertook to supply 29 Tor-M1 missiles to Iran under a $700 million contract signed at the end of 2005. The United States protested the deal, which it feared could bolster the military capabilities of the Islamic Republic, classified by Washington as a "rogue state" and part of "the axis of evil."

The Tor-M1, developed by the Russian company Almaz-Antei, is a high-precision missile system designed to destroy aircraft, manned or unmanned, and cruise missiles flying at an altitude of up to 10 kilometers (6 miles). It was introduced at the Russian aerospace show MAKS in 2005.

2. Those are really formidable weapons systems.
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 11:23 PM by acmejack
I checked them out and the Tor-Mi is very efficient, in the range of 92 to 95% kill probability to 25 miles. The same contract also included some S-300 medium range SAMs which are effective out to around 75 miles. Word is, these are the best there are period. They have about 99% Kill Probability. Bad Juju if one were to have to fly an aircraft about those parts. It would call for the offering of much sacrificing of alcoholic beverage to the goddess of electronic countermeasures.

edit: had the kill probabilities reversed.

7. Check your sources
and then consider ASPJs, standoff jamming, ECM, decoys, ARMs and other means of defense suppression. Then roll in the lack of experience of Iranian operators. EW is still part magic, and experience is the key. The systems in question have never gone up against US or Israeli countermeansure. Finally, no system has a real PK that high...

Note that home on jam is most effective on high power fixed emiiters such as ground radars and can not effect standoff jammers

11. Here are some citations
I suppose we shall find out. I really hope you are right. I have little faith in the ASPJ. I am very well acquainted with ECM, ECCM and the like. I was an EE at GE and Westinghouse for many years, after a Naval career. I don't want to see trouble come and I really don't want to see our guys fly into the teeth of something that doesn't work out. I am afraid this might not. I am particularly concerned the Russians may have sent the Iranians some more advanced models than we know, since the S-400s will fit into the tubes of these launchers and have even better capabilities, especially against our E-3s.

Tor M1 can detect and track up to 48 targets (minimum radar cross section of
0.1 square meter) at a maximum range of 25 km, and engage two of them
simultaneously, at a speed of up to 700 m/sec, and at a distance of 1 to 12
km. The system's high lethality (aircraft kill probability of 0.92-0.95) is
maintained at altitude of 10 – 6,000 m'. The vertically launched,
single-stage solid rocket propelled missile is capable of maneuvering at
loads up to 30gs. It is equipped with a 15kg high-explosive fragmentation
warhead activated by a proximity fuse.

The S-300PMU2 Favorit can engage targets flying from 10 m to 27 km above the surface at a speed of up to 10,000 km/h. It is claimed that it has a kill ratio ranging from 0.8 to 0.93 against aircraft and from 0.8 to 0.98 against Tomahawk-class cruise missiles.

The S-300 family is very difficult to jam and can only be evaded with some assurance by stealthy F-22A or B-2 aircraft. The range of the S-300 PMU-2 allows it to target aircraft that operate over Taiwan, thus denying the Taiwan Strait as an air defense buffer
zone for the Taiwan Air Force. Jane’s reports that China may be funding the development of the even longer-range S-400 missile, while Asian sources report that China may be co-producing the deadly short range TOR-M1,44 which can shoot down precision-guided cruise missiles and bombs.

6. This chess move
hurts Israel more than the greater high tech of the US. It is designed to inhibit Israel while pressure is destroying the US progress toward doing the strike. They are related even if the Israel strike is only pre-arranged saber rattling.

This is not the empty show Russia made in the first Gulf War giving utterly useless stuff to Hussein and possibly intel to the US or standing on the sidelines even less friendly during the Second Gulf War.

If the US stops for any reason, Iran will be substantially grateful to Russia.
