WSF: Peace Needed for World Progress

Nairobi, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) Antiwar movements of the world attacked the militarization of police in the United States and other industrialized countries, asserting that peace is indispensable for the people s progress.

US military domination and Washington s insistence on making several European governments and Japan part of this strategy, with the excuse of fighting terrorism, received a definite rejection at the seventh World Social Forum meeting in Nairobi.

Attending this event, in session since January 20, are activists from the Japanese project Peace Boat, with a strong campaign in favor of fraternity and against wars.

Akira Kawasaki, responsible for nuclear disarmament issues and militarization in Peace Boat, explained to Prensa Latina that their presence at the WSF is an attempt to prevent modification of the Japanese Constitution, especially article nine in which the Japanese people "renounce war, defending a sovereign right of the country.".

In a conference of International War Resisters, Francisco Bulnes of Cuba demanded world support in closing the naval base the United States maintains on Guantanamo against the will of the Cuban people and government, and which has been used for five years as a prison and torture center for supposed terrorists.

Pakistani International Actionaid also repudiated wars and marched to the Moi Sports Center against the transnational British Petroleum, which they accused of supporting "anti-terrorist" wars in order to supply the military.
