GOP urges (Sandy) Berger lie test

GOP urges Berger lie test
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Eighteen House Republicans have urged the Justice Department to proceed with a polygraph test for Samuel R. Berger, the former national security adviser who agreed to take the test as part of a plea of guilty of stealing documents from the National Archives.

"This may be the only way for anyone to know whether Mr. Berger denied the 9/11 commission and the public the complete account of the Clinton administration's actions or inactions during the lead-up to the terrorist attacks on the United States," the congressmen said in their letter to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales.

The congressmen -- led by Rep. Thomas M. Davis III of Virginia -- said a prompt lie-detector test is needed to determine the extent of Mr. Berger's thievery, especially because the former Clinton administration adviser reviewed original documents for which there were no copies or inventory.

...

Mr. Davis, former chairman and now ranking Republican on the House Government Reform Committee, released a report by his staff on Jan. 9, saying a Justice Department investigation of Mr. Berger's admitted document theft was "remarkably incurious."

5. What, they don't trust the National Archives?
The NA has already stated that Berger did not remove any original documents, only copies of originals. He's already pleaded guilty to that. What more do they want? Will they not be satisfied until they've extracted their pound of flesh?

14. Do you have the link for the "copies"?
I have never read that. I have always read that he removed and "destroyed" original, classified documents.

16. Berger's Plea (WSJ April 6, 2005)
... we called Justice Department Public Integrity chief prosecutor Noel Hillman, who assured us that Mr. Berger did not deny any documents to history. "There is no evidence that he intended to destroy originals," said Mr. Hillman. "There is no evidence that he did destroy originals. We have objectively and affirmatively confirmed that the contents of all the five documents at issue exist today and were made available to the 9/11 Commission." ...

19. "Especially, where" is right! Especially, WHERE?
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 06:24 PM by Judi Lynn
From the article:
After a long investigation, however, Justice says the picture that emerged is of a man who knowingly and recklessly violated the law in handling classified documents, but who was not trying to hide any evidence. Prosecutors believe Mr. Berger genuinely wanted to prepare for his testimony before the 9/11 Commission but felt he was somehow above having to spend numerous hours in the Archives as the rules required, and that he didn't exactly know how to return the documents once he'd taken them out.

More than a few conservatives have been crying foul, or whitewash, in part because Mr. Berger's plea means he'll likely avoid jail and lose his security clearance for only three years. So we called Justice Department Public Integrity chief prosecutor Noel Hillman, who assured us that Mr. Berger did not deny any documents to history. "There is no evidence that he intended to destroy originals," said Mr. Hillman. "There is no evidence that he did destroy originals. We have objectively and affirmatively confirmed that the contents of all the five documents at issue exist today and were made available to the 9/11 Commission."
Make the move to read for comprehension.

7. It was the document that explained how terrorists could fly planes into buildings.
If Condi had had that document, she could have stopped 9/11.

13. If these GOPig congress creeps are lying,
about original documents being stolen, they should not be in office. Lying about a case for political reasons should carry a penalty. As far as I heard all the originals were undisturbed.
