(NC) Republican (State Senator): (Movie) Scripts need reviewing (by government)

Raleigh | Citing the controversy surrounding the Dakota Fanning film Hounddog, the leader of the state Senate Republicans says he wants the government to review scripts before cameras start rolling in North Carolina.

That system, said state Sen. Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, would apply only to films seeking the state's lucrative filmmaker incentive, which refunds as much as 15 percent of what productions spend in North Carolina from the state treasury.

"Why should North Carolina taxpayers pay for something they find objectionable?" said Berger, who is having proposed legislation drafted.

It is not known whether Hounddog's producers have or will apply for the incentive. A call Thursday to the N.C. Department of Revenue, which oversees incentive payments, was not returned.

I think the options are to give the incentives to all or none. Elected officials don't have the right to pick and choose based on their own personal values. Personally, I tend to oppose using taxpayer's money as an incentive even in the form of tax relief to lure private business into an area. But, since it already happens in some places, other places have to do the same to compete. It amounts to corporate welfare and is way too widespread IMO.

That way we can tax subsidize all of those "Good Christian" movies the public loves so much. :sarcasm:

I've taught eight-year-old girls in my third grade public school classroom who have been rape survivors- gang rapes, rapes by family members and one whose mother sold her child's body to score some meth. So, a scene which shows a child's expression as she's being raped is now controversial? Please, it's a wake up call.
