Cheney Responds to Hagel's Criticism
Email this Story

Jan 28, 10:32 AM (ET)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney shot back at Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has accused the Bush administration of playing "a pingpong game with American lives" by sending more U.S. troops into Iraq.

"Let's say I believe firmly in Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican," Cheney said. "But it's very hard sometimes to adhere to that where Chuck Hagel is involved."

Cheney's comments came in a Newsweek interview released Sunday.

Hagel, a potential presidential candidate, has been outspoken in his criticism that the Republican White House lacks a coherent strategy in Iraq.

1. When the GOP throws Bush/Cheney overboard....
Hagel will look like the second coming of Jesus to them.

This is why he is so dangerous.

18. I've seen alot of DUers dismiss Hagel, saying he'd never get the nomination
...based on his stance on the war.

I'm with you on this. I say Hagel's position on the war is precisely why he stands to get the nomination. The war is currently FUBAR, getting more FUBAR everyday, and will be a smoking hole by the time the primaries roll around.

Hagel is gonna look like Moses, ready to lead his people from the chains of Egypt.

17. I don't think too many people do care what Cheney thinks
Doesn't his own approval rating hover around 19%? Makes Spiro Agnew look like the party vanguard.

11. the context of this story bothers me. Of course, it is more propaganda for Cheney
I guess I should not expect an unbiased story. But, Hagel is described as "a potential presidential candidate," casting a political basis for Hagel's position.

15. A person who goes into service to his country
owes his allegiance the people of that country, regardless of political affiliation. I respect Hagel for that.

However, Cheney's statement, as per usual, is as full of holes as a block of Swiss cheese. Cheney's only allegiance is to himself.

19. A Hagel nomination for president by the GOP...
...could be a big problem for the Dems in 2008. That anti-war, conservative on everything else mix that is Hagel makes me very worried.

if and when the yellow-bellied coward Dick Cheney meets Chuck Hagel face to face. Too bad dueling on the senate floor went out a a century and a half ago or so.

Isn't it obvious to the Repukes that Cheney is loyal to no one but himself?

Throw the fucker out on his ass already!!

Talk about a meltdown. Put some bull-dog journalist across from Cheney and wait for the explosion.

It would be a Capt Queeg moment.

32. It would not take much
Dick is not a happy man. He reminds be alot of Mr Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life". Just a miserable, wretched, small excuse for a man.

If you watch Dick, it's obvious that it wouldn't take much to make him blow a gasket. Would love to see it. Question is, which reporter has the tenacity, or guts to do it.

28. He's not against the war! Bullshit!
If he was against the war, he would have voted against it when he had the chance? This is just political theater. The "tension" between Hagel and the White House is all engineered and manufactured. It's just a way of the Republicans shedding a political liability for the next presidential election. If they can do this, the corporate/globalist/class warfare agenda of the super-rich can continue to proceed.

Yes, he's such a maverick.
