Soldier’s story brings tears to House

A freshman state lawmaker brought the House of Representatives to tears this morning with an emotional speech about his daughter narrowly surviving a mortar attack at a U.S. military base in Baghdad.

State Rep. Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro) cried as he stood in the well of the House speaking about his daughter, Staff Sgt. Latisha Glanton of the Ft. Polk, La.-based 488th Quartermaster Co.

One by one, lawmakers joined Glanton at the podium and placed their hands on his shoulders as he read an email his daughter wrote him yesterday. In her email, she describes her close call and the injuries her fellow soldiers sustained in the attack.

“One of my friends pushed me out of the way - praise God - and into safety, but two of my friends were hit,” Glanton said, reading from the email. “I cannot stop crying, Daddy. When I close my eyes I hear my friend McCall screaming he can’t feel his leg and seeing all the blood on his uniform. I hear Milton screaming ‘Don’t leave me!’”

...

Fellow lawmakers wept as Glanton spoke. When he finished, Republicans and Democrats alike lined up to embrace him.

26. The word is "bawling", if you were crying.
If you were "balling", I doubt that that horrific war story would put you in the mood for that activity. I'm not gonna spell that one out.

30. The repuke excuse is that there are many ways to
serve one's country. The Bush twins, for example, serve their country by keeping the citizenry entertained with tabloid tales of their partying and running naked through hallways.

9. During Vietnam we had the photos, but for Bush's war of choice we
have to resort to testimonials in Congress to give the American people a picture of the human toll.

14. And why is that?
Where ARE the photos of this war?

Where is the video?

Is it being chilled by the government? I assume that there are photographers and
videographers in Iraq?

Where are the damn pictures?

18. Why can't the media show us...because the chimp said so?
Who the hell is he to tell the media what they can and can't do. What would happen if say a little tv station in Texas might show them. Would the FCC take them off the air? Why?

19. I don't know what to tell you about that.

Although the coverage of the Vietnam War was extensive, it took a long, long time to finally reach a tipping point in the U.S. Most people were walking around in their bubble lives while the war waged on, until the youth movement rebelled, probably a direct reaction to the draft.

I do remember seeing a show on that t.v. show which Fred Savage starred that tried to explain it. I believe the show implied that we were so saturated with photos, that we became inured to the carnage, even to our own soldiers. Again, it was the war protests that woke America up. God bless those anti-war protesters because they suffered the worst ostracism for it, even to the point of being blamed for prolonging the war because powerful men in government didn't want to appear weak by conceding to them.

20. Sure hope his daughter makes it back. The anxiety must be astounding.
His website indicates Rep. Glanton is a veteran, too, from the elder Bush's war:

Hope his whole family survives this.

21. How will the 488th respond to this story (and Latisha Glanton) if it gets back to them?
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 02:18 PM by Dover
I'm sure that email was meant to be private. I would hope he asked Latisha if he could share it.

Also, what didn't make the OP (read the whole article) is that this poor guy has lost several members of his family THIS WEEK!
And some others in the hospital. Very strange and sad.

27. I'll point out something that people might be missing.
This sounds like a state house, not the federal one. Thus, they don't fund the war or have say over the troops.
State Rep. Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro)

A state Rep, and someone whose constituency is indicated by a town, not a state. I'm thinking state house, possibly Arkansas.
