Ex-U.S. Attorney General Ready To Defend Saddam

Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsy Clarke expressed readiness Sunday, December 14, to act as defense lawyer for ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, with western analysts suspecting the captured leader would be given fair trial.

"Certainly, why not. I am ready to act in his defense," Clarke told IslamOnline.net shortly after the U.S. confirmed the detention of Saddam near Tikrit.

Clarke, currently in Cairo to attend a two-day international anti-occupation conference, stressed that Saddam – however brutal – should be give a "fair, objective and impartial trial".

"Saddam must be domestically prosecuted first and - if this fails - he should be referred to an international court," said the former American official..Clarke averred that neither the U.S.-installed Interim Governing Council (IGC) nor the occupation forces is eligible to try the overthrown president...."The IGC does not represent Iraq. It is Bush's council,"...

1. I don't like Sadaam Hussein
but I hope Ramsey exposes the failures of American foreign policy. I hope he shows all the giveaways of chemical and biological weapons to Sadaam Hussein during the 1980s. I hope he shows the videotape of Rumsfield in court.

Why? This is something our country needs to learn from. We have to learn that we should not be assiting brutal dictators and turn a blind eyes to the people of Iraq and those who have suffered under our assitance of dictators.

3. Does anyone doubt the outcome of this trial?
It's gonna be a circus. Saddam better hope he can upgrade for Johnny Cochran.

4. It will be interesting to see what "fair trial" means.
Will Saddam get to choose his attorney?

Will he get to take the witness stand?

19. And the whole world has eyes on what Bush is gonna do.
What power this village idiot has.

This is what he loves......being center of attention.

Hmmmmm.....Should Bush chose the death penalty for saddam, the rest of the world will most certainly return the favor ten fold.

Should Bush chose the World Court, he will temporarily be respected,
yet will see his own future taking the same course.

Quite frankly....Even though *'s polls may rise, this is only a loose/loose situation internationally for bush.
All those SUV soccer moms feel safe and sound , but are
they really?

Clarke has chuztpah alright!!!....But will he succeed?

6. If Ramsey Clarke could expose the Reagan-Bush I policies and
use of Saddam, it would be a good thing.

Bush says he wants an open trial, only because he can use the video tape of the horror stories about Saddam. That will totally cloud the issue of the war's illegitimacy and other issues.

If Clarke was Saddam's attorney, I bet you'd see blackouts, like they did with Clark at the Hague. But Clarke would go back and tell the story about how Saddam was hand-picked by the US Admins., which could really backfire on Bush.

However, I don't think it will happen. I bet they give him a lawyer from another country who won't be so interested in exposing the past history of the US in Iraq. As one human rights worker said on the BBC, embarrasing stuff may come up, for both the US and the Thatcher gov., but the main thrust will be Saddam's crimes...

However, aren't we accomplices?

7. Ramsey Clarke is my HERO....
:loveya: I love his points of view...on just about all issues. He's a good balance to the vast right wing extremists. If he got more "air time" on TV, we'd see some heads rolling....but w/ the "mob" in power, I'm afraid Ramsey's head might be one of 'em.

Bring it on, Ramsey!!! And stay away from small aircraft and high buildings!!

10. I doubt it will be televised...
Wouldn't want to compromise "national security" (ie. anything embarassing to a re-election campaign)

11. A televised trial with Ramsey Clark would be interesting.
I do think the IAC (Clark's group) should distance itself from the Ba'athist rule. But an exposure of US/Western policy in support of Hussein's rule would be called for. This is more than simply complicity. Hussein could not have existed as ruler of Iraq without that support. The western powers are the author of Ba'athist terror.

16. Jacques Vergès, famed French attorney,
who defended Klaus Barbie, came out on French television today saying he would defend Saddam Hussein.

Vergès would be fascinating to watch. Saddam would just be a prop for Vergès, who would be putting the US and Europe on trial for aiding and abetting Saddam Hussein during his most genocidal period.
