Statue sought in honor of Zell Miller

The state Senate Republican leader wants to erect a monument to Democratic U.S. Sen. Zell Miller, who has been blasted by leaders of his national party but embraced by more conservative politicians.

Sen. Bill Stephens (R-Canton), whose legislative district includes Miller's hometown of Young Harris, said he was prompted to pre-file the legislation Monday in response to the criticism about Georgia's senior senator.

The latest came last week, when former President Jimmy Carter joined the Democratic chorus to say that "one of the worst mistakes" former Gov. Roy Barnes made was to appoint Miller to the Senate after Republican Sen. Paul Coverdell died in July 2000.

"Zell Miller's candor and independence are appreciated by so many," Stephens said in a news release Monday. "I admire any man or woman who will stand up for his or her convictions -- it's rare in today's political arena, and Senator Miller should be commended for that, not criticized."
