Falluja mayor relieved of post

Falluja, Feb 7, (VOI)- Falluja mayor Jassim al-Issawi was relieved on Wednesday of his post after demands from the local council made to the U.S. forces, a council member said.
"Falluja mayor Jassin al-Issawi was relieved of his post at orders by the U.S. forces," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

The source added "the order to relieve the mayor was made after demands in this regard were submitted to the U.S. forces from the Falluja residents and local council members."
He said "the mayor was unable to handle the tensed situation in Falluja and to offer basic services for the city residents."

"An elections to elect a new mayor for Falluja would be held soon," the source added.
Issawi, a lawyer, assumed his post as Falluja mayor in August 2006 succeeding Dhari Hadi al-Zubaie who was relieved on charges of squandering 4,000 million ID ($2,760,000) of public money.
