Arabs 'must learn from Saddam fate'
From correspondents in Cairo, Egypt
December 17, 2003
AUTHORITARIAN Arab governments will have to "learn lessons" from the startling video footage of the humiliating capture of once feared Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, analysts said today.

"Saddam Hussein's arrest is a considerable step toward removing dictatorship from a major Middle East country," Egyptian-American democracy activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim said.

His removal "supports calls by the United States and Europe to democratise the Arab world, the last region of the world to resist the wave of democratisation that our people demand", Ibrahim added.
"All the Arab people are following these breathless scenes and learning the lessons of struggle against tyranny," said Salama, who has sharply criticised both US policy in the region and Arab authoritarian rule.

"It remains for Arab regimes to learn the lessons of wisdom in seeing how tyranny can lead to loss and defeat," he warned.

1. Right..tyranny can lead to loss and defeat..
..unless, of course, your tyrannous government is in the good graces of hyper-aggressive Western powers like Britain and the United States. Then you're fine (see Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, China, etc)

2. Excuse me,
but are you posting this right-wing crap to let us know what the right is saying? Or are you just here to antagonize us?

I haven't seen or heard from you since everything started going wrong for the fascists in Baghdad. Now that "WE GOT HIM," you want to come back and gloat.

4. An "Egyptian-American democracy activist"?
Just when was the last time he was in Egypt?

I guess he hasn't heard about all the democratic reforms Egypt has been engaged in for the last five years.

There's nothing democratic about this guy.

He's advocating invasion and occupation.

5. The only lesson that anyone has learned...
is that if the U.S. doesn't like you, it can make up a reason to invade your country.

6. They also learned the importance of actually having WMD.
Saddam - No WMD, attacked, deposed, humiliated, jailed, and executed.
Kim - WMD, not attacked, not deposed, not humiliated, not jailed, and not executed.

7. This is why I advocate small countries get nukes
Understand, I was an anti-nuclear weapons activist for many years. But the sad reality, as it is with being armed for self defense in general, is that if you don't have a deterrent to rogue states like the USA, you leave yourself open to the fate of Iraq.

Believe me, I wish it were different. But in the material world, MADD works.
