Japan set to push for commercial whaling amid growing divide in global body
Japan will host an international conference next week to push its campaign to allow commercial whaling, but some of the world's most influential anti-whaling nations -- including the United States -- plan to boycott the meeting.

Tokyo, which has waged a long struggle to resume commercial whaling, says the Feb. 13-15 conference is needed to reform the International Whaling Commission, which Japan argues is meant to regulate hunts rather than ban them outright.

"The IWC is in a very critical situation, so I think our approach is one of the last resorts to rescue it," said Fisheries Agency official Hideki Moronuki. "The IWC might collapse, and that would be the real tragedy."

Japan invited all 72 commission members to the meeting, but Britain immediately announced it would not attend, and many other anti-whaling nations -- including Australia, New Zealand and the United States -- followed suit.

...

"The clear intention of the meeting is to limit the agenda of the International Whaling Commission to consumptive use," said Richard Wilson, a spokesman for the Australian Department of the Environment and Water Resources. "Australia is deeply concerned about this meeting by pro-whaling interests," he added.

1. Buying plane tix and hotel suites for those they already bribe, no doubt.
MORE whaling would result in more wasted food lavishing in freezers that nobody wants to eat, so I fail to even see the point.

7. If I lived on an overcrowded island,
I'd probably get most of my food from the sea, as well.

Don't know why they must hunt the largest sea creatures, nor possibly the most intelligent, though. It seems that the oldest creatures in the sea help breed younger animals, at least that's what I've read.

I guess, as the environment changes and more people populate the planet, food resources are going to be a growing concern.

It seems like reducing human population numbers, slowly through fewer births, seems like the smartest way to disrupt the coming food catastrophes. I've read that Japan has a negative population growth figure, though I may be mistaken. So, I guess I really don't understand the need for this.

Do they export whale products, or is this solely for their domestic market, i.e., their own citizens?

Perhaps they feel that they wish or need to be less dependent upon agricultural imports?

10. No, they have so much excess whale meat
They have warehouses full of it frozen, even after using it for everything from school lunches to dog food in an effort to increase demand.

Japanese consumers associate whale with older people and post-war poverty. It's sort of the cultural equivalent of creamed chipped beef on toast. But the whaling industry is operated at a loss by the government (they bought the fleet last year when the private sector owner bailed under pressure) as a jobs program/bribe to coastal communities in exchange for votes, similar to sealing in Canada.

That's the obscene element of this that should be brought home to everyone:
Regardless of whether you agree that whales are sentient (more so than most people
in public office), the fact is that the "food" is NOT needed ... they are NOT an
island population in need of sustenance (as some asswipes would have you believe)
but a murderous corrupt government-owned industry in search of money.

I have nothing but contempt for anyone who supports the slaughter of whales.

8. I would like to know what the Japanese's problem is
Seriously. WTF is wrong with this government (aside from endemic corruption)?

Norway and Iceland I can almost understand because of their geography and history. Japan on the other hand goes out of its way to kill these threatened and sentient species, chasing them all the way to Antarctica.

15. Maybe the Japanese think that with global warming
the whales will all be dead soon, so they might as well eat them. :)

I know it isn't really funny. Threats are everywhere.
