Israel planning unilateral withdrawals despite opposition.
JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) continued to drop hints of major unilateral steps in dealings with the Palestinians, including the total evacuation of the Gaza Strip (news - web sites), despite US warnings and fierce opposition by settlers.

The Israeli daily Maariv reported that Sharon was planning to unveil a plan for a major army redeployment and the dismantling of several Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.

"All the Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip will be evacuated. At the end of the process, isolated settlements in Judea and Samaria will be evacuated," the daily said, using the Israeli term for the West Bank.

2. Kind of a mixed bag.
IMO, Israel needs to totally withdraw from all occupied territories, then they will get my fullest support against terrorism.

Unilateral withdrawal is better than unilateral settlement, however.

3. sounds like a good realistic first step, on face value, and interestingly
US administration is suddenly "against" unilateralism and "for" negotiation.....go figure.

Sharon, as one who knows the war history of the ME first hand, may finally see the situation spinning into chaos.

Extremism in Israel is a growing problem and unsupportable in the long run.

And, of course, this all may be a smoke screen quid pro quo with US. Sharon looks "independent" of US policy and US looks "independent" of Israeli policy...I get so jaded.

7. Yes, I thought the US position was strange, too.
I suppose there is a chance that Sharon is grasping reality but the PNACer's don't want to.

Sharon would not give this up unless there was an ace up his or * sleeve. Wonder if it is for appearances only? As in doing this gives the illusion of peace while patiently waiting for the Syria/ Lebanon then Palestine liberation so that Israel can occupy whatever territory it wants. Maybe since they've destroyed Palestine that is no longer viable option compared to another area?
