Ashcroft's Senate Campaign Must Pay Fine
WASHINGTON -- Attorney General John Ashcroft's 2000 Senate campaign and his political action committee have agreed to pay a $37,000 civil fine for campaign finance violations.

The Federal Election Commission on Tuesday disclosed the agreement it reached with Ashcroft 2000 and the Spirit of America PAC. The campaign and PAC denied any wrongdoing. The agreement left it to them to work out how to divide the fine between them.

At issue was the Senate campaign's use of a mailing list developed by Ashcroft's PAC.

The commission concluded Ashcroft 2000 received about $110,000 in list-related income, resulting in an excessive contribution to it by the political action committee. PACs are allowed to give up to $5,000 per election to a federal candidate.
