Republicans Block Bill on U.S. Attorneys
Senate Republicans blocked a bill Thursday that would curb the Justice Department's power to fire and replace federal prosecutors. Democrats had sought to give the courts a role in the appointments of U.S. attorneys, to GOP opposition.

The objection by Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., to the proposal was long anticipated. So Democrats used the occasion to complain anew about the firings of at least seven prosecutors, some without cause, under a little-known part of the Patriot Act.

Democrats say Attorney General Alberto Gonzales used the law to get around the Senate confirmation process and install Republican allies.

"I believe that their intent was to bring in people from the outside to give some of their bright people an opportunity," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. "That is wrong."

1. Shameful politicization of anti-corruption prosecutor positions.
Really speaks volumes about this administration. And there's Sen. Kyl protecting the ill-gotten gains.

12. That almost the entire federal establishment has been politicized should be evident to all but the
blind, the totally apathetic, and the wholly ignorant. :)

3. no, DiFi
"....give some of their bright people an opportunity"??

No. Their intent was to bring people in from the outside to serve as Bush FIXERS. Paul McNulty probably had a hand in all this, now that he's Deputy AG. He's the ultimate Bush fixer.

15. "Bright people"? Are they "clean and articulate", too?
Apologies to Biden, but that sounds like a sarcastic response from Feinstein.

8. In one respect, I wish we were like Mexico:
The people of Mexico are rising up and resisting en masse.

When will Americans find the courage, or even the awareness, to do the same?

11. QualComm just hired Carol Lam, so we're probably screwed here in San Diego!
... with any followups on the prosecutions and other investigations that were in the works here! Bilbray and Duncan Hunter are probably breathing easier and probably encouraged QualComm folks to extend her this nice fat offer!

all to Democratic attorneys. When the Repubs object, we can tell them to go see Kyl.

18. What exactly was the action that blocked this bill?
Did Kyl filibuster all by himself? The article says "Republicans", plural. Specifically which Senate Publicans were involved in blocking this measure? Was there ever a recorded vote of any kind? I sure would like to know how every Senator weighed in.

19. We are in for two years of this crap.
So in 2008, we need to hammer them on this. Mercilessly. The people gave the majority to the Democrats, and these pigs have done nothing but obstruct the will of the people. In recent years the freepers, on the few occasions when we were able to block Bush's judges, liked to refer to the "tyranny of the minority." And now the Senate Republicans are showing us what that really means. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

21. The hypocrisy is stunning. Remember the nuclear option?
When the Democrats were the minority it was like abused spouse syndrome. Now it plays just the opposite, as if the Republicans are still in charge.

The thing that pisses me off is how can our government even be Constitutional when things get slipped into bills, things that weren't knowingly consented to? It's infuriating. This is what needs to be fixed. Why should Arlen Spector get to have his own private legislative session? That, and this administration does illegal crap, and the only remedy is to come along and try to pass another law restating that what they did was illegal. Meanwhile there's no accountability for having broken the law.

:argh:

20. From the article:
"Yet the version of the Patriot Act that contains the disputed provision passed overwhelmingly last year with bipartisan support."

Do we have enough DRY POWDER?

Didn't ONLY FEINGOLD vote against this SHREDDING OF OUR CONSTITUTION
that is the "Patriot Act"?

WHERE WERE OUR SENATORS?

22. It's a new form of government. They pass things, but they don't know what they are
Things get "slipped in." It's not like informed consent. Shit happens. Maybe the democrats could slip impeachment into a farm bill or something.
