AP: Report Urges FCC to Limit TV Violence
Report Urges FCC to Limit TV Violence

By JOHN DUNBAR
The Associated Press
Thursday, February 15, 2007; 6:06 PM

-snip-

The long-overdue report suggests Congress could craft a law that would let the agency
regulate violent programming much like it regulates sexual content and profanity _ by
barring it from being aired during hours when children may be watching, for example.

The report also suggests that cable and satellite TV could be subjected to an "a la
carte" regime that would let viewers choose their channels.

Citing studies, the draft says there is evidence that violent programming can lead to
"short-term aggressive behavior in children," according to an agency source, who asked
not to be identified because the commission has not yet approved the report.

The issue is bipartisan. Martin, a Republican, gave a joint interview Thursday to The
Associated Press with Democratic Commissioner Michael Copps.

"The pressure to do something on this is building right now," Copps said, noting that
television violence comes up regularly during media ownership hearings he conducts
across the country. "People really feel strongly about this issue all across this land.
This is not a red state or a blue state issue."

5. I wish the FCC would take their whiny conservative anti-free speech
values and shove it up their ass. If someone doesn't like the violence on tv, then don't fuckin' watch it; or get a v-chip, I really don't care.

6. a la carte looks good
c-band big dish systems used to be a la carte if you chose that instead of packaged pricing. However, the move to 4dtv digital has also accompanied a move away from a la carte for some channels. Among them are MSNBC that won't be purchasable except as part of a digital "package" of channels bundled together.

So I guess that new KO contract won't in any way be paid by this satellite programming customer!

This year we had to decline purchasing it because it wasn't a la carte anymore on 4dtv digital satellite, it was only available as part of a bundle of other channels, and we only purchase a la carte. One of those personal "just say 'no'" rules we follow with zero tolerance.

11. Censorship is never good.
I hate doctor and lawyer dramas. The problem is solved by changing the channel when they come on.

Why is that so incredibly difficult?? It's not like there is one state channel out there.

And it's not like there isn't any warning about the content of a program or no device that can block programs that meet a certain criteria.

The FCC shouldn't regulate content in TV programs. Cable networks voluntarily censor swears and other things in response to their advertisers and audience. If the FCC lifted its controls over the public airwaves, nothing would change.

There already is a movement to extend FCC content regulatory control over cable and satellite channels. I'm sorry ,but I don't want my television entertainment censored by politicians and religious nuts like Focus on the Family.

It's time for people to take personal responsiblity for what they view rather than have the goverment "protect" them.

9. How about limiting (or eliminating) infomertials
Broadcast stations in Portland will block out hours of programming on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with this trash- often two or three stations do it at the SAME time.

You can't tell me that's in the public interest.

Hell, that basically theft of the public airwaves- and ought to be grounds for license non-renewal.

16. What exactly to they mean by regulate?
Do they mean adding more "Viewer Discression is Advised" warnings or do they mean completly blocking the show?
