Iraq resolution passes House
Senate to consider similar measure Saturday

BREAKING NEWS

WASHINGTON - The Democratic-controlled House, Friday, approved a nonbinding measure disapproving of President Bush's decision to deploy more troops to Iraq, opening an epic confrontation between Congress and commander in chief over an unpopular war that has taken the lives of more than 3,100 U.S. troops. The final vote was 246 yeas and 182 nays with six not voting.

"The stakes in Iraq are too high to recycle proposals that have little prospect for success," said Speaker Nancy Pelosi, leader of Democrats who gained power last fall in elections framed by public opposition to the war.

"The passage of this legislation will signal a change in direction in Iraq that will end the fighting and bring our troops home," she vowed.

"Their so-called slow-bleed approach is the bite that will surely hurt those fighting under America's flag overseas," said Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, the second-ranking Republican, as debate neared an end.

It's a start & Murtha has laid out the plan & agenda for all to see if you even care instead of just making swipes.

Assuming it isn't filibustered in the Senate. In other words, nothing will change. The only thing that will stop this is complete defunding or impeachment.

If Murtha's already laid it out for the public, then the Republicans already know how to shoot it down. This is a high-stakes game of Texas Hold 'Em, and the cardinal rule is to never tip your hand for the other guy.

29. Can't get that passed - senate in the way, then the veto.
Positive legislative acts are not going to happen. On the other hand negative acts, specifically defeating the next war appropriations bill in the house, cannot be filibustered or vetoed. The funding for the war is gone by a simple majority vote in the house.

31. It's More Than What We Have Previously Had
Look, I have a lot at stake here, my brother is over there, and I am jubilant about today.

First of all, we had GOP standing up to *. Would that have happened even a year ago?

Second, * will go ahead with his plans, but this time, even those who previously supported him are watching with disbelief. * will of course do everything he can to throw a tantrum and further expose himself as the mentally ill freak that he is.

Third, and this is a given, more troops will die in the meantime. Horrible and tragic and it makes me sick, but how can people NOT juxtapose the continued stubbornness of * with the fact that our soldiers continue to die. Very smart, Maria. Very smart.

Fourth, impeachment? At this late in the game? Better to let him go down as the worst president in history while rendering him an ineffectual lame duck numbnuts and continue to destroy GOP dreams of dominance for years to come.

It's a start, I think that it's tremendous.

45. Thank you - a great post
I'm glad you're jubilant, and that your brother is hopeful. I know my nephew who returned from his tour in October, and does NOT want to go back, is also happy.

There is only so much we can do - people who expect miracles are going to be disappointed, but the reality is, it IS a start, it will hopefully get the ball moving in the right direction, and lead us out of this mess. It's not easy with a pResident who believes he's above the law.

I love your last paragraph! "ineffectual lame duck numbnuts", indeed. I hope he is painfully and slowly neutered.

60. You're simply ignorant. Sorry to put it so bluntly
They're setting the table for further action. And that simply MUST be done. And they do have a plan. Anyone listening to Murtha knows that. There is no magic bullet to kill the war immediately. Legislation to simply defund the war in its entirety would be roundly defeated, and would be a huge setback. That's the facts.

An overwhelming asswhomping in November, and an overwhelming middle finger extended to Chimpy today.

When will the LEFT WING media start living up to their namesake? If they're going to be excoriated by the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh for being so damned liberal...WHY NOT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE?

FOX makes no bones about cozying up to the right. It's time for the mainstream media to drop all pretense of being balanced and GIVE THE RW what they want.

54. Quit Wasting Time And Cut Off The Funds . . .
I'm sick of hearing "the Iraqis need to stand up for themselves" for over two years - I don't see that happening as long as our troops are their for target practice. Congress needs to take back the authority it abdicated - - giving the go-ahead to a war monger was a major mistake that needs to be rectified. There are no easy answers, as we run the risk of not only losing the peace in Iraq, but the entire region as well. We need to work on mending the fences around the world and gain back the trust of our alienated allies, something that I don't see happening as long as that jerk remains in office.

59. It's Just Not That Simple
I hear you, but you know that just "cutting off the funds" isn't that simple given the congressional rules and the political reality, especially in the Senate. Hey look, the Dems are doing well. We have started with this: a real debate, a non-binding resolution, and MUCH more oversight in the congressional committees. Now we are moving toward additional steps to place some real checks and balances on Bush's ill conceived policies with BINDING measures and conditions. Pelosi, Reid, and the Dems are saying NO MORE RUBBERSTAMPS!! I know it is hard to be a bit more patient, but that's what we just have to be. We have only just taken power, and we need to be a little more patient and reasoned and we will chip away at Bush in pieces, BUT this is a HELL OF A LOT MORE than we could have ever hoped for with the rubberstamp R's still in power. Let's look at how full our glass is rather than how empty.
