Marine Apologizes in Iraq Criminal Case

By THOMAS WATKINS
Associated Press Writer

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) -- A Marine who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and conspiracy apologized Friday to his country, the Marine Corps and the family of an Iraqi man his squad killed.

"I can honestly and truly say that I am sorry that I did what I did," said Lance Cpl. Robert B. Pennington at his sentencing hearing. "Saying I feel bad just does not begin to describe it."

Pennington, 22, pleaded guilty Tuesday to kidnapping and conspiracy. He was part of an eight-member squad accused of kidnapping and murdering Hashim Ibrahim Awad, 52, last April in the Iraqi town of Hamdania.

A murder charge will be dismissed, provided Pennington sticks to the terms in a pretrial agreement requiring him to testify for the government and remain on good behavior. He was the sixth member of the squad to plead guilty in the case, though one of those troops withdrew his plea ahead of his sentencing.

3. We're here for your fucking freedom, part whatever
<Describing his mission in Hamdania as "fuzzy at best and convoluted at worse," Pennington said that as a Marine he had been taught to be aggressive, to take the initiative and to take the fight to the enemy.

<"As callous as it sounds, it's guilty until proven otherwise," Pennington said. "You have to make the assumption that unless they show you otherwise, treat them as thought they are your enemy.">

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., Feb 17 (Reuters) - A young Marine involved in
the April killing of a 52-year-old Iraqi man was sentenced to eight years
in prison on Saturday, the fifth of eight troops to plead guilty and be
sentenced in the incident.

Lance Cpl. Robert Pennington, 22, pled guilty to conspiracy and kidnapping.
In exchange, prosecutors dropped murder, larceny and housebreaking
charges.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Pennington will testify against the
remaining three Marines, two of whom plan to fight murder and conspiracy
charges.

After five days of testimony and argument, a military judge sentenced
Pennington to 14 years in a military jail and a dishonorable discharge, but
the sentence was reduced to eight years by the plea agreement.

Following the sentencing, Deanna Pennington, his mother, called the prison
time a punishment for her family.

5. Marine to serve 8 years in killing of Iraqi
CAMP PENDLETON, California (CNN) -- A U.S. Marine will serve no more than eight years in prison in connection with the killing of an Iraqi civilian, a Marine Corps spokesman said Saturday.

Marine Lance Cpl. Robert Pennington was sentenced to 14 years' confinement but will serve no more than eight under a plea agreement, Marine spokesman Sean Gibson told CNN.

Pennington pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges regarding the death of Hashim Ibrahim Awad, 52, in Hamdaniya, west of Baghdad.

Pennington was among a group of seven Marines and a Navy medic charged in Awad's death. He and two other Marines were ordered to stand trial in October.
