Giuliani praises conservative judges

By BOB LEWIS, Associated Press Writer

RICHMOND, Va. - Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani, who favors abortion rights, said Friday if elected in 2008 he wouldn't hesitate to appoint anti-abortion conservatives such as Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito to the federal bench.

Giuliani headed a fundraiser in Richmond organized by Jerry W. Kilgore, the anti-abortion Republican gubernatorial candidate in 2005, and attended by several social conservatives who oppose abortion.

"They share the kind of overall judicial philosophy that I have," Giuliani said during an impromptu news conference just before the fundraiser.

Giuliani said he helped select U.S. attorneys and federal marshals during his service in the Reagan administration. People who filled those positions were "strict constructionists" in their approach to constitutional law, he said.

5. One brief and clear
television commercial on his personal past would end his presidential run. Will anyone have the nerve to do it? Frankly, I doubt it.

20. His previous views were most likety pandering
Give his history, I'd say that these recent comments are probably a more accurate reflection of his true feelings. His previous views were probably tailored in order to get elected in NY.

15. The GOP and every right wing commentator will...
latch onto the GOP nominee in 2008. That is why we have to work as hard as we can to win.
2008 is not "in the bag" for us.

"their religion is republicanism first", and republicanism only!

21. As mayor he was racist and abrasive
Can't wait for him to rat out the people who gave him a home away from Gracie Mansion (after Donna split) by declaring he is against gay marriage.

those two inparticular REALLY give me the creeps, and the idea of either one of them as potus SCARES the hell out of me. i'd say the same about brownback or jeb bush, if they actually had a shot at being the repuke candidate....but they don't.

18. We need to bookmark this and bring it out now and often to our
dem friends who might support the miserable little twerp. He never provided any masks for the patriots who volunteered to dig out the WTCs, and now he promotes anti-abortion judges. Hope Kilgore makes you big money, Rudy, because you just lost millions of votes. Just another PUG hypocrite like McCain.

22. As far as I'm concerned, Guliani might as well be a member of the religious right
if he wants to stack the Courts. The problem is, America has been misled to believe he's a centrist who supports abortion rights and gay rights. I'm sorry, but anybody who wants to stack the Courts with far right judges is striking a blow against abortion rights, gay rights, and many other rights that Americans care about. We need the Democratic candidate to win AND we need to increase our lead in the Senate. Not supporting the Democratic candidates in 2008 is like handing over the Courts to the religious right.
