AP: Suspect in Wiesel Attack Is Arrested
Suspect in Wiesel Attack Is Arrested

By JASON DEAREN
The Associated Press
Saturday, February 17, 2007; 8:31 PM

SAN FRANCISCO -- A man accused of roughing up Nobel laureate and Holocaust scholar Elie
Wiesel at a San Francisco hotel earlier this month was arrested Saturday, authorities said.

Montgomery Township police arrested Eric Hunt, 22, of Sussex County, N.J., at 1:30 p.m. EST
Saturday. He faces charges that include attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, elder abuse,
stalking, battery and the commission of a hate crime, according to San Francisco police.

He was being held without bail in the Somerset County Jail in New Jersey, awaiting extradition
to San Francisco.

San Francisco police Lt. Dan Mahoney said he doesn't believe Hunt belonged to a larger
organization.

21. I'm curious why you'd choose that one, and not a thick compilation of Primo Levi's work?
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 04:33 PM by AlienGirl
Or, for that matter, Children of the Flames?

2. Bullshit.
"San Francisco police Lt. Dan Mahoney said he doesn't believe Hunt belonged to a larger
organization."

Sussex County is stiff with right-wing whackos. All sorts of weird stuff going on up there.

5. Maybe he freelanced.
Part of a disorganized continuum of racism. A lot of FR is like that. Calling it an organization would be misleading.

Either way, this guy's online bragging gave him away so his online writing history probably speaks volumes about the truth of the matter there.

13. Right wing terrorists are never part of a larger organization
Kind of weird, huh? Some young, concerned enviro-types get together and after one too many earnest discussions go and torch a few SUVs, and they're "eco-terrorists," deserving of the harshest penalties our society can mete out. Idiotarian right winger puts into action the sort of whacko fantasies his entire cabal is marinated in, and, well, he's just a lone nut. No larger organization here. Can't really prosecute anyone for it.

You're right; it's bullshit with a capital Bull. Morris Dees blew that racist Tom Metzger's organization to hell in a civil suit when the official law enforcers couldn't be bothered.

18. Zactly. Now, if Wiesel were wearing a fur, it'd be different...
The FBI would be all over them lefty terr'rist types in a heartbeat.

Strangely enough, the only terrorist attacks with significant loss of life or injuries that I can recall, outside of 9/11 and the first WTC bombing, came from right-wing loonies.

4. KnR for this story. Good they caught the creep
Hope they take another look at his associates back home.

Justice would be filling the walls of his jail cell with photos of the camps.

10. He attacked Wiesel?
No judge and no jury in the country is going to take it easy on this guy. Even if you set the issue of anti-semitism aside, Wiesel has to be in his late seventies by now. The book is going to be thrown at him regardless of where he is tried. He is going away for a long time.

14. It sounds like he wasn't, but why would that matter?
"Assault" is not defined by injury, nor is "attempted kidnapping."

Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 03:59 PM by ama
verbal assault is not as bad as physical assault i look forward to hearing both sides of this as I'm sure you do
¨American common law has traditionally defined assault as an attempt to commit a battery.

Assault is typically treated as a misdemeanor

16. "Both sides"? How are there two sides here? There is an attack on an old man.
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 04:08 PM by AlienGirl
Do you really think the attacker has a "side" worth listening to?

And by that logic, do the defendants in the various spousal abuse assault and battery cases also have a valid "side"?

23. "verbal assault is not as bad as physical assault..." Oh?

I suggest you consult with professionals in the field before issuing any more such ignorant opinions.
The truth is that injuries caused by physical assault are far more likely to heal, while the injuries of verbal assault can last a lifetime... in large part because, as their injuries are, at the VERY least, visible and provable, those suffering physical injuries are far less likely to be written off as "whiners", or accused of "making things up".
Such off-hand comments do a grave dis-service to every shattered soul crushed by vicious hateful speech.
As for "both sides", I would like to hear just what possible provocation the "alleged assailant" felt; what possible danger he felt from such an old man...
Oh, and since, if I recall correctly, Mr Wiesel is an Israeli, perhaps the alleged assailant should be tried by an Israeli court!

12. How much evidence do Holocaust deniers require before believing?
That's the problem with belief; it's plastic and malleable. People choose to believe what they like.

"Night" was one scary little book. As was the film "The Pianist" and others.
