Muslim Cabbie Charged With Running Over Students After Religious Dispute
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Muslim cabdriver from Somalia ran over two college students near Vanderbilt University after getting into an argument with them about religion, police said.

Ibrahim Ahmed, 37, a driver for United Cab, picked up two men near the Vanderbilt campus early Sunday morning, Capt. Mike Alexander of the Nashville Police Department said, referring to the incident report.

The two men, reportedly college students from Ohio who were visiting Nashville, were on their way back to the campus.

A conversation about religion ensued between the driver and his two fares. The local FOX affiliate in Nashville confirmed from a friend and fellow co-worker that Ahmed is a Sunni Muslim from Somalia.

1. weird
The reporter falls all over himself to point out the religion and national origin of the cabbie, but makes no similar effort to describe the students.

Given the outcome of the event, all three of them are probably fanatics, but we're left to wonder.

2. a bit more info here:

Taxi driver had earlier Metro traffic charges
He's charged with trying to run over two passengers

By COLBY SLEDGE
Staff Writer

A Nashville taxi driver accused of trying to run over two students after a heated discussion over religion Sunday had at least two other run-ins with police during the past year, including a high-speed chase through downtown Nashville.

~snip~

According to Metro officer John Pepper's report of Sunday's incident, the three men had a conversation about religion while in the taxi that "became heated." Shortly after the men paid Ahmed, he chased them in his van across the parking lot and over a curb, striking Invus.

Although Ahmed's religion was not known, Metro police spokeswoman Kris Mumford said one of the students is Catholic and the other is Lutheran. She said she did not know which was which.

Invus suffered a broken ankle, a hip injury and abrasions in the incident and was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition Monday evening.

5. ....Unless alcohol was involved...
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 10:21 AM by ohio2007
It's a fact, college students due tend to frequent bar districts. Some Cabbie's refuse to allow alcohol in their cabs ( no big deal ) unless the booze is in the students that hired the driver for a lift.

something else that not mentioned.;
What were the college students doing prior to hiring the Cabbie ?

I think factors a to why religion was even mentioned need addressed not only by the students but the Cabbie and the cab company policy.

btw
Go Bucs !

6. Lest we forget: Husband Strangles Wife After Watching Passion Of The Chirst
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 10:50 AM by IanDB1
Mankind really needs to put away childish things like "Religion," which we really should have outgrown by now.

From The Times
September 12, 2006
'Don’t strangle the anointed one,' wife pleaded in row over Mel Gibson film

A HUSBAND almost throttled his wife during a heated theological argument triggered by a controversial Mel Gibson film, a court heard.

Michael Watson loosened his grip on the throat of his wife, Patricia, only when she appealed to his faith by gasping: “Do not touch God’s anointed.”

The court was told that the couple, both devout Christians, celebrated his birthday with dinner and a bottle of wine before sitting down to watch The Passion of the Christ.

Mrs Watson left the room, and her 44-year-old husband became so upset by the graphic depiction of the Crucifixion that he pulled the leads out of the television and went upstairs.

His wife then decided to watch the God Channel and went to ask him why the television was not working.

Yvonne Jobling, for the prosecution, said that an argument developed, and Watson accused his wife of being evil. He grabbed his wife by the throat and she fell to the floor. She said: “His grip was so tight she was unable to speak, but she then managed to say something of a religious nature which seemed to cause him to relax his grip.”

Magistrates in Bedlington, Northumberland, were told that Mrs Watson, a 51-year-old care worker, had gasped: “I’m anointed by God. You know that, Michael. Do not touch God’s anointed.” Mrs Watson, who was left with red marks and soreness to her neck and a grazed forearm, later told police that she had believed that her husband was going to kill her. Watson told the police that everything his wife said about him must be true because she never lied.

8. No, it proves that some people are violent, whether

they are Christians, Muslims, atheists, etc. You don't have the right to say what "Mankind" (a sexist term, BTW) should do. You don't have to practice religion and it's not your business whether others do or not.

10. You know...if they are going to start labeling "muslim this and that"
then they need to start also labeling other crimes. "white christian school shooter kils 5 today" "hispanic athiest 23 year-old kills 5 teenagers in DUI crash"

12. Hmm, I don't know if that's fair...
It seems as if the reason why they mentioned the fact he is Muslim is because they were arguing about religion. Now, if they were not arguing about religion then I would agree with everything you said... As for your examples, if a white Christian teen school shooter is an avid fan of god and is some how that is connected to his shooting, then bringing up his religion is valid... Or, if a Hispanic atheist,23, ran over five religious teens after a religious argument, then it would be valid to put that in the headline.

Am I wrong?

13. Wow. One Muslim 'gets even' for getting taunted about his religion.
Big story.

There was a guy in Denver who was a Christian that went on a road-rage binge and killed 2 other Christians.

Therefore, all Christians are evil killers and Christianity is a violent religion.

I wonder why that story wasn't front-page news at Fox. Does the fact that the guy in your story was a Muslim and the guys he attacked were Christian make it front-page news? Was it front page news at Fox when the guy in Arizona murdered the gas station attendant because he was Muslim and wearing a turban (of course, it later turned out the guy was Sikh, but the killer didn't know that).
