Blair denies authorizing Kelly's identification

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Tuesday that he did not authorize the identification of a weapons inspector as the source for a British Broadcasting Corp. report questioning the honesty of a government dossier on Iraqi weapons.

The inspector, David Kelly, killed himself last week following his interview by a parliamentary committee and after being identified by the British Ministry of Defence as a possible source. The BBC subsequently confirmed that Dr. Kelly had been its source for the report.

"I did not authorize the leaking of the name of David Kelly," Mr. Blair told reporters on a flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has endured an intense grilling from students while on his trip to Bejing.

The Prime Minister fielded tough questions at Tsinghua University over such topics as the death of weapons expert Dr David Kelly and the war in Iraq.

One student asked: "Can you tell us frankly what was your feeling when you heard the news of the death on the way to Japan? How do you get through this and regain people's trust?"

No one leaked the name... they just leaked so much info that reporters couldn't help coming up with the name... and then the government simply "confirmed" the name, so they could say they didn't leak it... same result, different spin. That's all.

And who decided to confirm the name? Hoon, Campbell, Blair.
