1. 1 less vote for Bush in Illinois in 2004!
Of course, Bush may not even be on the ballot over there.

2. Note that the article makes no mention
of the fact that Ryan is a repub. More of the same from the party of personal responsibility.

20. Applaud Ryan? Absolutely not!
As he was leaving office, unable to run for another term because of all the scandal surrounding him, Ryan made the victims of every death row inmate relive their horrors in front of some bullsit "clemency board." It was obvious to just about everyone at the time that there would be a mass clemency coming down, regardless of what transpired in front of the board. And that is exactly what happened. Gut-wrenching testimony was extracted from these people, in a very public setting, to serve as fodder for Ryan's dog and pony show. It was despicable. That is the type of thing he needs to be remembered for.

8. No mention or little mention of the Connecticut Republicans' troubles
Gov. Rowland is in some hot water. I was stunned to see Candy Crowley touch on this subject on Inside Politics yesterday.

Around the same time that the Kentucky governor was making a tearful apology about his mistress, Philip Giordano, mayor of one of the biggest cities in Connecticut, was being sentences for getting blow jobs by 12 and 13 year old girls (arranged by a prostitute who offered the services of her daughter and niece to Mr. Giordano). And where were this acts committed? The Mayors office in the city of Waterbury, CT. We didn't hear much about it. Anything that was mentioned, never mentioned his party affiliation. I believe Mr. Giordano also ran for the Senate against Joe Lieberman in 2000.

6. Well actually they do mention party affiliation
CHICAGO -- Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan was charged in a federal racketeering indictment Wednesday with taking payoffs, gifts and vacations in return for government contracts and leases while he was secretary of state.

Ryan, 69, a Republican known worldwide as a leading critic of the death penalty, gradually became the focus of a corruption investigation that began even before his 1998 election as governor. The growing scandal was a factor in Ryan's 2001 decision not to seek a second term.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Your right though, usually that detail is left out.

9. Let it be noted...
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 02:27 PM by Angel_O_Peace
that George Ryan was the chair for Illinois during the 2000 Bush pResidential campaign.

hmmmm....bet Ryan knows many things...

(scroll down a bit)
Story: GOV. GEORGE RYAN OF ILLINOIS SPEAKS ON HIS MORATORIUM ON DEATH PENALTY

Gov. George Ryan.
Note: Interestingly, Ryan is the chair of George W. Bush's campaign in Illinois. Interesting because Bush has put more than 130 people to death in Texas, some of them with serious questions of innocence. The Republicans who have come to this convention are generally more conservative than mainstream Republicans-- on the issue of the death penalty, as well as on abortion and many other issues.

10. Republican family values appear to be quite lucrative
http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/12/17/ryan.ap/index.html
...The indictment alleges Ryan received illegal cash payments and gifts, vacations and personal services. It says members of his family got cash loans and gifts totaling $167,000.

22. $167,000.00 CHUMP CHANGE
Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 06:55 AM by saigon68
The CHIMPANZEE and Cheney's friends at Halliburton, and Kellogg, Brown and Root got MILLIONS AND MILLIONS. Incentive bonuses pay raises, stock options etc.

Ryan was a fool if he thought he could get away with shit like that.

But then again he didn't have the blood lust to FRY some Minority dude to a crispy critter like the CHIMPANZEE did, when he was the governor.

23. That's A Pittance
The guys surrounding Ryan made millions. This thing is way deeper than that $167k suggests. He's being taken to task for letting all the other stuff happen. Not for the $167k.

it was only a matter of time before the truth came out on this GOP crook. Just another good ol American...I wonder if there is any motive by the ashcroft to go after on of their own because of the death penalty thing. There is a rift here maybe folks.

21. Didn't notice mention of party affiliation either
I read this today at work (early afternoon, MST) and looked to see what party he was with, not being up on U.S. state politics. I really didn't notice the mention that he was a Republican or that he was anti death penalty. When I didn't see a part affiliation, I just assumed he must be Republican.

Looking at the article again tonight (near midnight MST), I do see the second paragraph reference, but I also see the update notice, as below:

POSTED: 6:23 AM CST December 17, 2003
UPDATED: 10:33 PM CST December 17, 2003

So perhaps they added that paragraph later. I will admit, I might have just missed it, though.

24. throw that crook in jail
the stuff they are indicting him on is just a tip of the iceberg. But methinks this attack by rumsfeld canabilizing one of his own may be more about the moratorium on the death penalty than his crimes. Basically they are paving the way for the execution of Saddam, and they cant have one of their own against that.
