Truck blast kills 35 at Iraqi mosque
Edited on Sat Feb-24-07 12:34 PM by maddezmom
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A truck exploded Saturday as worshippers left a Sunni mosque west of Baghdad, killing at least 35 people and injuring more than 60 in an apparent sign of increased internal Sunni battles between insurgents and those opposing them.

The imam of the mosque in Habbaniyah, about 50 miles west of Baghdad, had spoken out against militants fighting the U.S.-backed government, including the group al-Qaida in Iraq.

At least 35 people were killed and 62 injured, said Lt. Abdul-Aziz Mohammed in Habbaniyah, which lies between the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah — both hotbeds of the insurgency.

1. Those last throes should come to an end any day now
Meanwhile the worthless trash flag waving bush backing scum of the earth "americans" continue to write their LTTE urging more of our kids to die so conservatives don't have to admit they are/were/and will continue to be wrong.

2. They, of course, leave out the interesting bits.
Were there any claims for the truck bomb?

Is it suspected to be a rare case of a Shi'ite group bombing a Sunni mosque outside of Shi'ite territory?

Is it a tribal thing, unrelated to anything else that's going on? Is it a tribal thing *related* to what else is going on--e.g. an AQ-affiliated tribe versus a "collaborationist" tribe? Were they just aiming--as so many groups seem to be doing--at simply killing people, or terrorizing them for the sake of pacification, or were they targeting a "moderate" mosque (one that is only 99% Taliban, unlike the purist ultra-Salafis)?

So many questions. Such poor reporters.

5. Well, it is sort of like a "everybody" versus "everybody" scenario there.
The United States Army and Marine Corps are composed of soldiers, not peace keepers.

9. By now, the story thinks other Sunnis are most likely to blame
an apparent sign of increased internal Sunni battles between insurgents and those opposing them.

The imam of the mosque in Habbaniyah, about 50 miles west of Baghdad, had spoken out against militants fighting the U.S.-backed government, including the group al-Qaida in Iraq.
...
There was no claim of responsibility, but suspicion fell on battles between Sunni groups in Anbar province west of Baghdad. Militants have increased attacks against Sunni leaders who support the government and denounce violence.

Though the first 2 paragraphs were in the original report, too. I can't actually see the reasons for where suspicion fell, though.

Bomber kills 39 Iraq mosque worshippers in possible sign of escalating
violence between Sunnis

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Feb. 25, 2007
By BRIAN MURPHY Associated Press Writer

(AP) A suicide truck bomber sent a deadly storm of metal, stone and jagged
plaster through worshippers leaving a Sunni mosque Saturday, killing at least
39 in a possible sign of escalating internal Sunni battles between insurgents
and those who oppose them.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear. But it carried the
hallmarks of an increasingly bloody struggle for control of Anbar province
_ a hotbed of anti-U.S. guerrillas since the uprising in Fallujah in 2004
that galvanized the insurgency.

U.S. military envoys and pro-government leaders have worked hard to sway
clan chiefs and other influential Anbar figures to turn against the militants,
who include foreign jihadists fighting under the banner of al-Qaida in Iraq.
The extremists have fought back with targeted killings and bombings against
fellow Sunnis.

The blast in Habbaniyah _ in the heart of insurgent territory about 50 miles
west of Baghdad _ was among the deadliest against civilians in Anbar.

12. Death toll from Iraq mosque blast rises to 56
FALLUJAH, Iraq (AFP) - The death toll from a bomb attack on a Sunni mosque in western Iraq has risen to 56 with 103 wounded, a doctor said on Sunday as Iraq's prime minister blamed Al-Qaeda for the carnage.

"The final toll of the car bomb which targeted the mosque is 56 killed and 103 wounded," said Dr Mukhies Abdul Hamid, medical supervisor for the Fallujah area which includes the town of Habbaniyah where Saturday's attack took place.

A local medic had said a fuel tanker truck rigged with explosives detonated outside the mosque as worshippers were leaving, causing mayhem.
